Surprise you. that may have worked a little better than this. now i think they re stuck with figuring out incremental things they can do to fix the problems with obama care. the worry was that you would have the death spiral. that insurance companies would say hey, let s get out of this. they would vote to repeal it, say it s not happening for a couple years. the sequester, the notion that people would work together if you force them to work together, i m not convinced they would have will a bill, two years later. but there might have been a lot of pressure, and there may have been more stakeholders in it. that s all i m saying. there could have been another way to do it. i know it s monday morning quarterbacking. repeal the bill. that forces everyone to have the conversation of what you do next. this is exactly what congressman brooks was proposing on cnn. essentially, let s break this thing, and everyone has to buy into the fix. we lost our opportunity for an outright rep ....

54 billion in the coming fiscal year. for the pentagon, that would be about a 10% increase in defense spending. good idea? i think it is really important that we increase defense spending because it has been artificially kept low by the sequester, by these artificial caps that reduce defense spending below what was necessary to keep the united states safe. but here s the problem. at the same time, the trump administration is proposing massive cuts to diplomacy and development, more than a third cut to the state department budget. that would be a huge mistake. tell us why because the argument is all this foreign aid going into these countries, u.s. taxpayers can t afford it. there s so much work that has to be done here in the united states, instead of building schools in pakistan, let s say, they should be building schools in new jersey. you ve heard those arguments. of course. well, first of all, foreign aid represents 1% of the federal budget. 1%. ....

Growing within the republican party and within the military intelligencia saying mr. president you can t cut the state department funding and argue that you re increasing the defense spending and make america safer. the two go hand in hand. i ll be as curious about republican reaction as anything else. it s a shift. i don t know how you describe it, michael, the shift that says all right, there are a lot of people you can agree or disagree whether you want more military. experienced people say they do need to upgrade the military and a lot who don t but the concept of reducing our soft power and our influence which we have seen in the president s behavior in the first 40 days but now being backed up by an actual thinning down of the state department and our diplomatic efforts around the world, i don t know if there s a school of thought for that other than isolationism. you re right, the military spending was frozen for so many years in some ways by the sequester. right. puttin ....

Referring to the senate. the tea parties intends to take down the leadership. i think that bodes very ill for republicans. i think is shows there s a faction of the party that wants gimmicks and stunts and doesn t actually want to accomplish anything. let s be clear. john boehner did have accomplishments in a very difficult time for his speakership, the sequester, a major accomplishment the expiring of the import/export bank, limited entitlement reform. it s simply not true to say he didn t do anything or john boehner wasn t a conservative. he absolutely was, but republicans have to understand they will not accomplish major reform with president obama in the white house. that s how our system of government works. you have to take back the white house. at the end of the day, i don t disagree with any of that, and john boehner was not what they needed today. it was a whole different congress. he could not count and figure out who the dissidents were and ....

There has been some griping over the course of the years, but eventually people came to and said we got to move this forward. what s really happened recently it s a very important point. a lot of these house republicans, they come from districts where amtrak plays no role. so essentially their entire model is it doesn t affect me i don t hear about it at home, i don t care about it, it s another big spend government boondoggle that we do not need. if you talk to republicans from the northeast, a lot of them push back on their more conservative counterparts and say hey, this actually matters a lot to us. so it s something that should be, in fact funded. what happened today is particularly striking. in march congress came together on a $1.4 billion re-authorization, the committee of jurisdiction actually agreed got 316 votes. however, because of the caps put in place by the sequester, by the budget dating back to 2011 alex, the appropriations committee essentially big footed the transpor ....
