Opening the city’s rail project for passenger service seemed a near impossibility just 2-1/2 years ago when it was digging a deeper financial hole and federal transit officials had lost faith and were withholding millions of dollars in badly needed funding.
City officials will open the gates at the first nine rail stations for free rides on June 30, meaning it will be impossible to get an accurate count of exactly how many passengers show up to ride the rail line in person.
Passengers will be able to board at 2 p.m. on June 30, for free, and tour any of the nine stations that will be open for service and hop on any train.
