Talking about the government's effort to ensure an uninterrupted power supply for the nation's growth, the Power Minister RK Singh in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha said the anticipated power generation capacity addition is 469 GW between 2023 to 2032. The minister stated that 26,380 MW of thermal capacity is under construction, 11,960 MW has been bid out and 19,050 MW is under clearance. The total anticipated thermal capacity addition by 2031-2032 will be 93,380 MW.

Speaking to Moneycontrol Managing Editor Nalin Mehta at the Policy Next summit held on January 18, Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy RK Singh answered questions on a wide range of issues that offer a glimpse into the future of India's energy policy.

The minister said 27,180 MW of thermal capacity is under construction, 12,000 MW has been bid out and 19,000 MW is under clearances. The total anticipated thermal capacity addition by 2031-2032 will be 87,910 MW.

India will also launch a pilot project using green hydrogen as storage for round the clock power having a capacity of 100 MW, Singh said. The current cost, as per preliminary calculations, of such a storage based power is ₹6 per unit, which is cheaper compared with last two months' average price of ₹8/unit on the power exchanges, Singh said.
