Since seizing power from the country’s democratically elected government in February, Myanmar’s military regime has been struggling on all fronts. Two months on, the men in uniform continue to perform poorly—except when it comes to killing their own citizens, something they have excelled at, having taken the lives of more than 500 people during their crackdowns. Nationwide public resistance to their rule continues unabated. Undeterred by arrests and forced evictions at the hands of the regime, huge numbers of civil servants are still refusing to work for them. Local administrative offices have been set alight.

NAYPYITAW—A meeting between representatives of the government and the Myanmar military (or Tatmadaw) held in Naypyitaw on Thursday in an effort to overcome the current political crisis ended without a breakthrough.
Sources with knowledge of the meeting told The Irrawaddy that the Tatamdaw expressed its distrust in Myanmar’s election body, the Union Election Commission, and asked the government to abolish it. It also asked the government to recount all votes in the Nov. 8 general election with the military’s assistance and to postpone the incoming Parliament, which is scheduled to convene on Monday. The two sides were unable to reach any agreement, however, as State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi reportedly rejected all of the demands.

YANGON — Myanmar’s Supreme Court in Naypyitaw on Friday heard claims from two military-linked political parties which asked the highest court to issue writs against President U Win Myint, State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the Union Election Commission (UEC) chairman, alleging they broke the law during the November general election.

Tensions are rising in Myanmar after military spokesman Major General Zaw Min Tun hinted at the possibility of a coup, should the military’s claims of electoral fraud go unaddressed. Particular attention has been paid to his comment on Tuesday that “The military will abide by existing laws including the Constitution. But that doesn’t mean the military will take responsibility for the state or won’t take responsibility for the state.” This has led the media to focus on the likelihood of a coup, though top military leaders say such a step would be a last resort.

YANGON— Even before Myanmar’s voters went to the polls in November’s general election, the country’s powerful military began flexing its political muscles, criticizing the government for the electoral body’s handling of preparations for the polls and raising doubts over whether the election was free and fair.
Its threats and warnings in the run-up to the election even prompted concerns over the possible threat of a coup. At that time, many were relieved after the military chief’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing vowed to respect the people’s will on election day.

It has been a uniquely challenging year, even by the standards of Myanmar’s recent history. The global COVID-19 pandemic has not spared the country, and while the toll has been severe—Myanmar ranks third in ASEAN for cases and deaths—the most dire predictions have not come to pass, thanks to the heroic efforts of the nation’s doctors, nurses and volunteer health workers, who have worked tirelessly and at great personal risk to ensure that every patient receives free hospital treatment and that the country’s quarantine centers continue to function. The nation’s stretched medical resources have been calmly and capably deployed by Health Minister Dr. Myint Htwe and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and crucially supplemented by the donations of Myanmar citizens, rich and poor. The nation’s economic ministries rose to the complex challenges posed by the pandemic, moving quickly to secure external assistance while drawing up plans to cushion the blow as much as possible at home.
