Pop Culture Portrays Aerial Bombardment of Middle East as "Business as Usual"

Pop Culture Portrays Aerial Bombardment of Middle East as “Business as Usual”

President Biden’s airstrike on the Syrian border on February 25 was received in some quarters as though it was his first act of presidential warfare. But U.S. military operations in the Middle East, particularly remote drone operations, are a matter of routine, rather than an exceptional rarity. No matter the personality or predispositions of the commander-in-chief — whether they are statesmanlike and grandfatherly like Biden, or vulgarly reactionary like his predecessor — the continuous military violence of the forever wars initiated by George W. Bush’s administration is ingrained into the structure of everyday power. Biden’s letter to Congress rationalized the strike in terms of the U.S.’s inherent right of self-defense, and in some ways this shows that Biden doesn’t even need to think of a new justification for these strikes. Despite his announcement of a review of his drone policy, presidential aerial bombardment of the Middle East is “business as usual.”

JOHN P. EGAN - Hudson Reporter

Hudson Reporter
Funeral services have taken place for John P. “Jack” Egan, 86. He died peacefully on Jan. 29 at the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice in Fredon Township. Natural Burial services were held in Rosemont. Born and raised in North Bergen, Jack lived in Jersey City before moving to Highland Lakes in 2002. He was ordained a Diocesan Catholic priest in 1960 and served parishes in Lodi, Honduras and Panama. One of the most meaningful periods of his life was the nearly 20 years he spent in the St. Boniface parish in Jersey City, working with a mostly Latino community. He was an active member of the peace movement and engaged extensively in non-violent civil disobedience around peace and justice issues, for which he was arrested 30 times in Jersey City, Washington, DC and other places. After disassociating from the ordained priesthood in 1985, Jack worked for the Visiting Homemaker Service as a patient advocate, trainer and director of the Senior Community Independent Living Service. One of the essential loves of his life was his wife, Martha Lewin, with whom he shared a 50 year relationship. In his later years he volunteered at The Nurturing Place of the York Street Project in Jersey City, which he loved. He also spent many joyful hours volunteering at Pacem En Terris in Warwick, NY. He took to wearing a red plaid hat with a red pompom on top, which he called his gladdening hat and was delighted by peoples’ positive responses. Jack authored four books: Baptism of Resistance: Blood and Celebration (1983), A Priest Forever and No More (1998), Pilgrimage Within (2012) and The Colors Love Each Other (2019), as well as having many articles and interviews in local and national publications. He was a member of the Haiti Solidarity Network of the Northeast and the Kairos Community in NYC. He was predeceased by his parents, John J. and Erma (nee Reinhardt) Egan, sisters Catherine Egan, Eleanor Lombardo and Veronica Fleissner, and his brother Thomas Egan. Jack is survived by his wife, Martha Lewin; his sisters, Erma McCarthy and her husband, Robert and Maureen Graziano; his brother, Bryan Egan and his wife, Bonnie; his sister-in-law, Noreen Egan; his brother-and-sister-in-law Sam and Grace Lewin; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

UCL Survey of English Usage, UCL

2020 saw two books by Survey team members appear in print.
The
Oxford handbook of English grammar, edited by Bas Aarts,
Jill Bowie and Gergana Popova, provides a wide-ranging and authoritative
critical survey of current knowledge of the grammar of the English
language, and competing research methodologies that may be applied
to it.
Sean Wallis’s monograph
Statistics
in Corpus Linguistics Research focuses on a single perspective.
Whereas ‘statistics’ is frequently associated with bottom-up ‘number-crunching’,
he shows how a cyclic methodology in Corpus Linguistics, with the
linguist in control, may be combined with statistically sound argumentation.
Such a perspective places a greater burden on the linguist, however.

Classroom Lesson Turns Into Winter Gear Drive for Egan Warming Center

While Marcy Hellman prepared lessons for Veteran’s Day this year, the weather turned cold enough for Egan Warming Center to activate its services. This led to discussions about unhoused veterans. And how Egan Warming Center’s namesake, Major Thomas Egan, was found frozen to death 12 years ago on Eugene’s streets.

To help, the class sent a letter to school families asking donations be dropped off when they pick up supplies for online learning.

Second grader Lola Schultz, who contributed a significant amount to the letter, shared how participating makes her feel.

The ponchos are military grade and are large enough to cover a grown man wearing a backpack. It also has grommets so it can be spread out and pitched like a tent. Juniper has chosen to donate the Cosmic pattern so they’ll look nice and be easily recognizable.
