On January 31, 1895, Foxton’s Manawatū Herald printed a story headlined “A Strange Case.” It may well have had Victorian lady readers reaching for their smelling salts. Apparently from the high court of Brussels it ran: “In March last, a young and charming married lady met with an accident of such a nature that it was necessary to amputate her right leg.
