or 60 you'll see me rocking and rolling just a little bit. but so far jane 41 is the highest gust i've seen and that was at the airport just down the street. >> things will continue to go downhill from here watching the wind shift high tide coming in about a half hour to an hour sore so and that could spell trouble. >> we're already watching the higher than normal tides as you mentioned because of the astronomical tide but with the push of water from the offshow flow we'll be watching. bvd we'll check back with you. the latest on idalia high end category 2 storm, as i mentionedy grupp grade from here we're talking about a major hurricane that will be our first to make a major hurricane land fall funnel the 2023 season. that's a live look from tallahassee, the state capitol which, as this storm progresses farther off to the north at a pretty good clip, a hurricane warning in effect for tallahassee. this storm will be racing inland during the morning hours, and as it does so, it's going to bring

>> and this is an iryeah that's geographically -- that water piles uhm more quickly. >> the shape of the coastline is like a mitt. >> it catches the water being pushed in but still, it's a south wind going into cedar key, which is in levy county in through here. >> it's not even truly perpendicular here and not a push of water and that reasonable worst case scenario for these portions of the eastern big bend inn of the nature coast is few 16 feet of surge and that was the concern earlier where we had the tampa bay metro area in the mix. >> this will ab catastrophic surge further up the coastline. >> still a significant water ride that we've been tracking and a threat for the tampa bay area will be there tomorrow afternoon, which was already outside after major hurricane expected to be one of the highest high tides of the entire year, of all of 2023 because of the supermoon and the big push

you see on the some of these walls that are coming through and the wind going to be real constant at our back and that's going to keep that wall of water inland and as soon as the wind stops, and as soon as the direction ends in this way, blowing it in, this will actually recede but that's not going to be until at least at dawn and worst part about it, guys, it's a full moon tonight, wednesday night, supermoon so you've got the stronger tides, and you've got the stronger tides rolling through in the next couple of days and it's dark. >> i don't see a lot of people in the roadway and just one guy did cross now but it's a steady stream of water now moving right across the road and this is gulf view drive and it's covered up. >> it's probably covered up at our -- and our hotel is about three blocks up and the waves are constant and they're coming through and this is the way it's been for the last 20 minutes. >> you saw me getting blown around and still getting blown

so you see the shape of this, how it's just getting tucked in toward appear lachie bay. that's what the -- appal achee bay. that's what the storm path shows. on the other side of the storm system, you get the significant component of onshore flow. it'll stay that way for several hours' time. you throw that in conjunction with the fact that this is an incredibly poorly timed major hurricane with the super moon today. now, we're expecting it to peak today. these were already going to be some of the highest high tides of all of 2023, and now you've got a surge that's helping to assist that. jane just pointed out the pinhole eye. when you got the smaller inner cores where you can see the darker reds and the purples, these smaller cores can intensify much more quickly, jane. that's what we're expecting this go around. this is likely going to be up to

above normal tide levels. >> the ocean came through the house. it came literally came through the house. there is sludge and snakes and you name it. >> reporter: years earlier in 1995, hurricane opal made landfall near pensacola beach, florida as a category 3 storm. again, the story was the storm surge. >> totally gone. we didn't do anything but lock the door on our way out. >> reporter: with opal, the storm surge spanned about 120 miles from pensacola beach to mexico beach. that surge combined with breaking waves soaked portions of the florida panhandle's coast with water as deep as 10 to 20 feet. the maximum storm tide, which combines storm surge and regular astronomical tides was 24 feet recorded near fort walton beach. hurricane hugo made landfall as a category 4 storm in september 1989 just north of charleston, south carolina.

>> ian: yeah, this would have been a smaller of the e2 high tides, the ones that bob mentioned into the early afternoon and actually the big one so we'll see how much of this water with an on shore flow can actually flow back out into the gulf for out of tampa bay before we get into that big high tide cycle and the wind is still expected to be on shore. >> the reason for that -- here is the center of circulation, that big inner core, that eye -- that's about 100 miles offshore of call it now tarpin springs or closest -- northern parts of pinellas county. >> as you get this huge counter clockwise circulation on the bottom side of this, jane, even as this moves towards landfall, you're still going to have with this tail, a significant push but wow, we're usually using the radar like this, jane, to look at cupp lets when we're tracking tornadoes -- can you please lets when we're tracking tornadoes and this major cuplet as major

of the highest high tides of all of 2023. that's if there wasn't a major hurricane out in the gulf of mexico. so here you go into tomorrow afternoon and to your point, jane, these winds aren't even purely on shore yet. this isn't an orientation that favors yet the worst of the storm surge. >> jane: you bring up a great point about what is going to happen after the storm leaves the gulf of mexico. i think there is going to be this brief period into the afternoon where the conditions start to subside as this storm lifts into the georgia and the carolinas in the afternoon hours. the second high tide that comes in as idalia pulls away, we'll still have the southwesterly push of the winds on the back side of this storm, and that's going to make the second high tide and the storm surge push last into the day tomorrow, and that, i think, is going to be the one key component in the impacts of this storm that last for 15 hours or more. >> ian: jane this kind of shows the point i was just making there, so couple of things to consider.

we already set record high -- record storm surge in the east bay and old port tampa, old tampa port, earlier this morning, and now as we approach another high tide according to the mayor who we had on in our 8:00 show is talking about the worst is still yet to come. there are three factors at play and that being the super moon, which is on its closest approach to earth, so that has that tug on the tides, it makes the low tides more exaggerated and it makes the high tides more exaggerated. so super moon, we have inland flooding from the interiors parts of the florida peninsula and then we had that tremendous amount of water that has surged in ahead of idalia. so all of these three working in combination to create the storm surge threat from tampa bay, northward into the big bend and we are worried that this water will continue to rise as we reach that high tide level later this afternoon with all of those
