A Swim Cap Made For Black Hair Will Get A Second Look From Swimming's Governing Body - Health - NPR News

The International Swimming Federation says it will revisit its decision barring a swimming cap designed specifically for natural Black hair from being used in competition.
The makers of the Soul Cap, a product tailor-made so that swimmers with voluminous, Afro-textured hair can protect their hair while in the water, said on Instagram last week that the sport’s governing body had denied their application for certification. The decision effectively assured that the cap would not be in use when the Olympic games begin later this month.
The news drew considerable backlash, prompting the International Swimming Federation, also known as FINA, to release a statement on Friday acknowledging the public response and announcing that it was “reviewing” the situation.

Soul Cap: FINA 'reviewing' decision to ban swim caps for natural Black hair at Olympics

Soul Cap: FINA 'reviewing' decision to ban swim caps for natural Black hair at Olympics
By Kelly Hayes
Here are the times in history when the Olympics have been canceled or postponed.
The International Swimming Federation (FINA) said it is currently "reviewing" its decision to not allow the use of certain swim caps designed for natural Black hair at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, saying it understands "the importance of inclusivity and representation" after facing backlash.
The Switzerland-based FINA drew criticism after Soul Cap, the British brand behind the caps, announced that the governing body for water sports had rejected its application last year to be officially recognized. Soul Cap makes extra-large caps designed for those with dreadlocks, weaves, hair extensions, braids, thick and curly hair, according to the company’s website.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) is expected to reconsider its decision to ban swim caps specifically designed for black swimmers at the Tokyo Olympics.
FINA announced June 30 that Olympic athletes are banned from wearing the swim cap brand “Soul Cap” that designs hats to suit dreadlocks, afros, weaves and braids, Metro reported. The federation announced its intention to reconsider the decision emphasizing the importance of “inclusivity and representation” in a statement Friday.
“FINA is committed to ensuring that all aquatics athletes have access to appropriate swimwear for competition where this swimwear does not confer a competitive advantage,” the statement said. “FINA is currently reviewing the situation with regards to “Soul Cap” and similar products, understanding the importance of inclusivity and representation.”

Team GB's first black female swimmer bids to overturn Olympic ban on swimming cap

A ban on the cap worn by Team GB's first black female Olympic swimmer is being reconsidered.
Alice Dearing, 24, had previously been told the headgear designed to fit over dreadlocks, braids and Afros could not be worn at the Olympics because it did not fit 'the natural form of the head'.
But the International Swimming Federation (FINA) is now reconsidering the ban after experts asked how it could possibly enhance performance, The Times reports.
Ms Dearing had written on the Soul Cap website: 'People used to tell me my hair was ''too big'' for the cap — never that the cap was too small for my hair.'
