Twenty-five years ago members of this LGBT group were excluded and arrested for trying to take part in St. Patrick's Day celebrations now members of the Lavender and Green Alliance were welcomed with open arms in the Bronx, New York.
Ingrid Lewis-Martin, a long-time friend of the mayor’s who also serves as his chief advisor, drew the rebuke of LGBTQ rights leader Allen Roskoff for recently attending an event held by Ruben Diaz Sr., a former City Council member and state senator whose views about the LGBTQ community have sparked outrage in the past.
Former New York City Council Member Danny Dromm once protested the Fifth Avenue St. Patrick’s Day parade from the sidelines because Irish gay groups were banned from marching, and now he’s happily part of the parade’s leadership as chief financial officer.
Aides to the mayor couldn't have been happier with the big turnout because there were some calls to boycott the event.
