The accident, which killed volunteer firefighter Tom Royds, occurred around 20 minutes after a collision between two cars on the westbound expressway in Lower Merion. Royds and other members of the Lower Merion Fire Department had responded to the initial accident to close the highway's right lane and shoulder.
