Awarded Best Restaurant in The Daily Northwestern’s Best of Evanston for the past three years, the popular Latin American eatery opened in 2013 as a storefront for empanadas she had sold at farmer’s markets. During the pandemic, the small business twice first in March 2020 for around three months and then again from December 2020 for three months when Merlos-Ruiz contracted COVID-19. Tomate Fresh Kitchen announced Sunday it will postpone its reopening from Feb. 15 to early March, citing weather concerns. The Latin restaurant, which specializes in “gourmet street food,” closed near the end of 2020 after an employee tested positive for COVID-19. A few weeks ago, owner and chef Tania Merlos-Ruiz announced it would reopen in a Facebook post, to the excitement of Evanston residents and Northwestern students. Tomate’s most recent closure was not its first since COVID-19’s onset. Abiding by Illinois guidelines, the restaurant temporarily closed in 2020 from mid March until June before reopening for take out and delivery orders. ....
Tomate Fresh Kitchen to reopen Feb. 15 This pandemic winter just got a little brighter Tomate Fresh Kitchen is set to reopen Feb. 15, the restaurant announced Wednesday night. “Hello Friends, Thank you for your outpouring love and concerns,” owner and head-chef Tania Merlos-Ruiz wrote on Facebook. “Everyone is doing fine.” The family-owned Latin American street cuisine restaurant closed temporarily toward the end of 2020 when a member of the team was diagnosed with COVID-19. Coffee Lab owner Daniel Aquino said upon Tomate’s reopening, he expects the line to enter the Noyes St. restaurant will stretch all the way down the sidewalk and past his shop, a few doors down the road. ....
