Indian drug regulator has discovered that cough syrup and anti-allergy syrup manufactured by Norris Medicines are toxic, containing contaminants diethylene glycol (DEG) or ethylene glycol (EG). The same contaminants were found in Indian-made cough syrups that caused the deaths in Gambia, Uzbekistan and Cameroon since the middle of last year.
The WHO has named nine countries where tainted syrups may have been on sale, after the deaths of more than 300 infants on three continents last year were linked to the drugs.
