Food businesses encountered “significant problems” on the Irish Sea border this week as a raft of incomplete paperwork and a reportedly overwhelmed government-funded support service plagued the first week of the post-Brexit trading regime, MPs heard on Wednesday.
Northern Irish trade groups told MPs that many British companies had been unable to prepare for new customs requirements because of the last-minute trade deal.
Under the NI protocol, all food and drink entering Northern Ireland from Great Britain must now comply with EU customs rules including import declarations and customs forms. ....

Mr Leheny said his members had initially supported the backstop deal which was rejected by Parliament while Theresa May was Prime Minister.
That would have avoided the need for customs declarations.
He added: “This is a result of the UK Government rejecting that and it was entirely its decision.”
He said any alternative to the Protocol needed to be proven to work.
“We have been marched up to the top of the hill on this.
“To say let’s invoke this but do not have a plan on what to do next I think is just as dangerous for us.” ....

Brexit paperwork on deliveries to Northern Ireland from Great Britain is creating an overwhelming amount of work, the haulage industry said.
The country is following the rules of the EU single market to avoid a hard Irish border and has shifted checks on food standards to Irish Sea ports.
Customs experts involved in supporting traders are working days behind schedule, Seamus Leheny from LogisticsUK said.
The Northern Ireland policy manager representing freight companies told Stormont’s agriculture committee: “They have been simply overwhelmed by the work.

Last-minute guidance on online orders eases fears of Northern Ireland consumers


Department store giant John Lewis has said it s preparing to resume deliveries to Northern Ireland following new guidance on sending consumer parcels here.
But a body representing hauliers warned of trepidation about the new era in the transport of commercial goods between Great Britain and NI.
Last night at 11pm marked the start of a new regime for trade from GB into NI, at the end of transition period following the UK s exit from the European Union.
Under the NI Protocol, Northern Ireland effectively remains in the EU single market for goods, and while still part of the UK customs union, will enforce EU customs rules. The changes mean checks and paperwork, including customs declarations for commercial goods coming into NI ports from GB. ....
