While Gopansothilingan used to study IT at York University, he was forced to leave over financial constraints, says Shulman. Shulman has organised a community fundraiser in hopes of doing something life-changing – raising the money he needs to complete university. ....

The concentration of universities in cities is contributing to depopulation and deprivation of rural areas in Norway and government should respond by legislating to decentralise higher education provision, according to a government report.
Universities and university colleges should be required by legislation to develop education opportunities in the rural districts for people living there, rather than encouraging people to move to the cities to study. The hope is that this would both encourage more people to stay and work in these areas and encourage more people from urban areas to study and build their lives in rural areas. ....

The North African correspondent for the Africa edition of
University World News (UWN) and contributor of news from the Middle East and Africa to the publication’s global edition, Wagdy Sawahel, has been named one of eight category winners in the inaugural African Labour Migration Reporting Awards.
Sawahel, an associate research professor at the National Research Centre in Cairo, Egypt, with wide-ranging expertise on the higher education sector, science, technology, innovation and the knowledge economy, won the Governance of Labour Migration category for an article about the migration of African health workers to the West titled, “COVID-19 drives medical brain drain – Is it all bad?”. ....
