Poorer students and institutionally vulnerable tertiary institutions have been disproportionately harmed by the impacts of national lockdowns, according to the academics who participated in the discussion, themed “Impact of a Pandemic: Global perspectives”.
Despite universities’ efforts to ensure equitable access to learning, poorer students in Africa and Europe have been disadvantaged by the global shift to online education in the face of campus lockdowns. ....

Academic faces prison for likening universities to ‘brothels’

BirGün newspaper that a Turkish prosecutor has called for a jail sentence of up to one year for an academic on charges of “degrading a segment [of] the public” following his remarks labelling the country’s universities as “brothels”, reports
Ahval News.
Professor Ebubekir Sofuoglu, an instructor in the history department of Sakarya University, sparked public outrage over his remarks on a television programme in December, when he blasted Generation Z over their values and dismissed universities attended by the group. “They are all almost like brothels,” Sofuoglu said, with “no exceptions”, referring to higher education institutions of Turkey today, while stressing the failure of the universities to contribute to the cities in which they are located. ....

This year, 2021, will see higher education institutions hit by COVID-19 looking to position themselves in the post-COVID world.
Institutions across the globe have been forced to take emergency measures both for their domestic and international students in reaction to COVID-19 and so have their governments.
Some of those governments have put their higher education institutions in jeopardy with their comments about international students. Some implied and some have directly stated words to the effect of “It’s time to go home!”.
We all wanted to believe at the time that this was said with ‘good intentions’. However, many institutions are now having to build back trust after statements made “in the heat of the moment” as they turn their minds to inviting international students back. We will see the long-term results of these statements in the years to come. ....

L Union générale des étudiants de Tunisie (UGET), told
University World News that 50 members of UGET have been arrested and 32 remain in pre-trial detention.
The first arrest was of Kais Schneiter, UGET’s representative in the southern region of Medenine, in mid-January, as protests sparked by alleged police brutality, economic woes and COVID-19 lockdowns gathered steam.
UGET activist Ghafran Sfar told
University World News that police “used psychological pressure” against Schneiter, “threatening to beat him and told him that if he did not stop agitating, they would put him in jail without approval from a judge”. ....
