Commission orders universities to resume on 18 January
The Guardian Nigeria.
Public universities in the country have been closed since March 2020 after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on an indefinite strike that lasted about 10 months.
Chris Maiyaki, the NUC’s deputy executive secretary (administration), said in a statement the instruction was given in line with the directive of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on the resumption of schools across the country. Maiyaki urged universities to safeguard lives by strictly adhering to the extant safety protocols and the guidelines of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on COVID-19. It has an effect well beyond the individual country’s exams as universities around the world try to assess the varied impact for international student admissions and attempts to be fair to students.
But the experience of last year’s cycle of school-leaving exams around the world, and the likelihood that COVID-19 related disruptions will continue to affect teaching and learning for the current cohort, have led to even greater reluctance this year to suspend crucial national examinations, with many countries believing there is little fair alternative for university admissions. ....

Thousands of university students offered 50% rent reduction

Thousands of university students offered 50% rent reduction
The United Kingdom’s largest student accommodation provider has offered its tenants a 50% discount if coronavirus restrictions have stopped them returning for their studies, as a growing number of universities have announced a suspension of all rent payments for rooms they own, write Bethan Staton, Jasmine Cameron-Chileshe and George Hammond for the
Financial Times.
Unite Students, which operates 177 properties in the UK, said it expected about 50,000 students, or two-thirds of its tenants, who are unable to return between 18 January and 14 February, to claim the partial refund for the period. The company said it was “the right thing to do” after Prime Minister Boris Johnson last week ordered a third lockdown in England, pushed back most on-campus teaching until February, leaving the majority of students who had travelled home for Christmas unable to return to university. ....
