Predictions for higher education worldwide for 2021
In 2005, my white paper,
Ten Trends in Higher Education, was published and I predicted the following for United States colleges and universities:
• Higher education providers will become more numerous and diverse.
• Part-time college attendance will increase and colleges and universities will offer classes in the evening and at the weekend.
• An increasing number of higher education institutions will work in partnership with employers to meet workforce needs.
• Telecommunications options will become standard practice, with students taking classes at home, on campus, everywhere, all the time.
• Women, minorities and adult learners will dominate future higher education enrolments. ....

Urgent questions on post-COVID university admissions

Urgent questions on post-COVID university admissions
Grades in school exams are the currency that United Kingdom universities use to decide which applicants succeed. But grades at A level (and Scottish Higher and Advanced Higher, International Baccalaureate, etc) are not just the major factor in determining university admissions. Grades are also used to fix the pecking order between different subjects and universities.
Officially, of course, grades are only one factor that universities take into account. Interviews and aptitude tests in subjects like medicine are also used. That is also the position legally. High grades do not automatically entitle applicants to admission. It is at the discretion of universities, unlike the position in much of the rest of Europe where all those passing the ....

High electricity tariff may cripple universities – Vice-chancellor

High electricity tariff may cripple universities – Vice-chancellor
Vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has warned that the suspension of the nine-month-old strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may not be enough to guarantee a smooth academic session in Nigeria’s institutions, writes Iyabo Lawal for
The Guardian Nigeria.
Ogundipe, who was recently reinstated after his face-off with erstwhile governing council chairman of the institution, Dr Wale Babalakin, warned of a possible blackout in many of the higher institutions over the hike in electricity tariffs by power distribution companies. Ogundipe, who stated this at a forum with journalists recently, said UNILAG, which used to pay monthly charges of NGN61 million (US$160,000) when academic and non-academic activities were at full capacity, recently paid NGN62 million for the month of November 2020 (when the university was closed). ....

Future of private BA, MA students hangs in balance

Future of private BA, MA students hangs in balance
Dawn  10 January 2021
Thousands of students, who are enrolled in higher education as private candidates, would no longer be able to continue their education after 31 March as the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has directed the universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to stop enrolment of private students for BA and MA examinations, writes Mohammad Ashfaq for
Dawn.
However, HEC and universities in the province have not developed any alternate system for private students, who are in-service or couldn’t get admission in colleges and universities for multiple reasons, according to sources.
Out of the 30 public sector universities, this scribe got data of a few according to which 30,000 students appeared as private candidates in the bachelor of arts (BA) examination conducted by Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan last year, 25,000 students in University of Peshawar, 20,450 in Bannu University and more than 11,000 ....

Legacy of COVID-19 will be better online capability

Legacy of COVID-19 will be better online capability
COVID-19 has been tough for all Nigerian higher education institutions, their staff and students, but one bright spot has been the fact that universities have developed remote learning capacities that will stand them in good stead in the future.
One university that has used COVID-19 to evaluate and improve its remote learning systems is the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), a public university based in Ife, east of Ibadan.
It has a Centre for Distance Learning, which was established as long ago as 2002 and which was able to operate during the height of the country’s lockdown so “students were receiving their lectures”, said Dr Akinsomisoye Stephen of the department of physiological sciences. ....
