Hong Kong university denies gutting China studies centre

Hong Kong university denies gutting China studies centre
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has denied that folding the Universities Service Centre for China Studies (USC) – established by one of the most respected China scholars in the West, Jerome Cohen – into the main library amounts to gutting the nearly 60-year-old institution, writes Phila Siu for the
South China Morning Post.
The move to digitise and put online the centre’s vast archive of ageing newspapers, books and video documentaries, some of which were critical of the nation’s government and covered politically sensitive events, would instead open the collection to a wider audience, the management at Chinese University said. ....

Distance learning institution told to reduce new enrolments

Distance learning institution told to reduce new enrolments
Thousands of students hoping to enrol to study at the University of South Africa (UNISA) will not be able to realise their dreams after the university council was instructed by the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Blade Nzimande, to reduce the number of new entrants by 20,000, writes Thami Magubane for
The Mercury.
The Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation ordered the university to reduce the intake of first-time entering students for 2021 because it had over-enrolled by the same number last year. The department said such action has to be taken to protect the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, which funds most students and is already under pressure. ....

Will Vietnamese student numbers in the US recover post-COVID?

Will Vietnamese student numbers in the US recover post-COVID?
Since the proof is usually in the statistical pudding, I periodically have a look at the Monthly Nonimmigrant Visa Issuance Statistics section of the United States Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs Travel.State.Gov website to satisfy my curiosity about the number of F-1 (student) visas being issued to young Vietnamese, especially in the often lengthy interregnum between
SEVIS by the Numbers updates.
It provides the most up-to-date information about trends related to study in the USA from a government that is notoriously unreliable in these matters.
Not surprisingly, the contrast between 2019 and 2020 was striking. In the 2019 fiscal year ending on 30 September 2019, the US Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) issued a total of 16,829 student visas. A year later, on 30 September 2020, that number had plummeted to 5,718, a 66% decrease. ....

Universities aim to start academic year by April

Universities aim to start academic year by April
Business Day.
Delays in the completion of the 2020 academic year as a result of COVID-19 related closures resulted in registrations for the new academic year being pushed back to late March for most universities. At least two universities in Gauteng said their first-year programmes were already full. Those who are still awaiting their matric results to secure space in universities may have to look for something else to do in 2021.
University of Pretoria spokesperson Prim Gower said their new academic year would start on 15 March, while the University of Cape Town (UCT) will be processing registrations for first-time students from 1 March. UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola said: “All undergraduate UCT students who are SA residents, and all international students who can return to the country, are expected to be in Cape Town for the start of the academic year on March 15.” Returning UCT students would be registering fro ....
