The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed a list of the feature films that are eligible for Best Picture consideration at the 93rd Oscars. Set to air on April 25, the list contains 366 films including some foreign projects. South superstar Suriya's
Soorarai Pottru is in the race. The film is loosely based on the book encapsulating the life of a retired Army Captain, G. R. Gopinath who founded Air Deccan, a low-cost airline. The movie is directed by Sudha Kongara, bankrolled by Guneet Monga's Sikhya Entertainment.
To be eligible for consideration under rules provisions implemented for the 93rd Academy Awards year only, feature films may open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, by February 28, 2021, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Drive-in theaters open nightly are included as qualifying commercial venues in the above cities. Films intended for theatrical release but initially made available through commercial streaming, VOD service or other broadcasts may qualify if the film is made available on the secure Academy Screening Room member site within 60 days of the streaming/VOD release or broadcast. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.

'Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus' Review: Adventurous Animated Noir From Croatia

'Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus' Review: Adventurous Animated Noir From Croatia
Multi-hyphenate filmmaker Dalibor Barić combines numerous bold techniques while reminding viewers of how much animation can do.

Dalibor Barić’s audacious “Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus” is a welcome reminder that “animated” carries more than one meaning. While it’s true that the Croatian filmmaker’s experimental lulu employs such methods as rotoscoping and collage, it’s also vibrant and alive in a way that few films falling under the wide umbrella of animation even attempt to be. And though the audience for elliptical fare of this nature tends to be self-selecting, anyone willing to get on Barić’s wavelength will find the experience strangely rewarding.

From March 5-10, Academy members will nominate between five and 10 films, with options ranging from 'Absent Now the Dead' to 'You Cannot Kill David Arquette.'
Three hundred sixty-six feature films — meaning 40 minutes or longer — have been deemed eligible for the best picture Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Thursday as it released its annual "reminder list" for members.
This is the highest tally of eligible titles in 50 years — there were 374 titles eligible in 1970 — but only the 22nd-highest total in the history of the Oscars. The first Oscars ceremony considered films from 1927 and 1928, hence its record-setting 562 entries. The rest of the top 20 is filled with other years from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

Producer
Ivan Katić has been in animation with his studio, Kaos, since 1995, when he was approached by
Dušan Vukotić, the only Croatian Oscar winner, who bagged the Academy Award for his short
Surrogate in 1961, to work on his new film. When Katić saw the film that Barić had basically made on his own, at his home studio, he immediately sent it to Annecy. It was quickly selected for Annecy's Contrechamp Competition, and screenings at festivals such as Bucheon, Thessaloniki and Seville followed. This portfolio was good enough for the Academy to accept Katić's submission.

'Accidental Luxuriance' review: Experimental cinema from Croatia

Print
As its verbose title implies, Croatian director Dalibor Baric’s experimental feature “Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus” is an inscrutable contraption. Chaotically arranged, like a feverish dance between mind-altering nightmares and pieces of reality, this ambitious mixed-media thesis operates under idiosyncratic rules to provoke a feeling of subconscious entrapment.
Dense dialogue and narration — only seldom making concrete statements — feed us a semblance of identifiable plot that peaks through the scratched filmed imagery. After disappearing for a few minutes in a time-travel lapse, Martin, a man on the run from a nefarious cabinet and displeased with the results of his trip, has largely forgotten his earliest memories. Sara, a woman fed up with ordinariness, and Inspector Ambroz, investigating this realm’s anomalies, add their voices to a crowded chorus of ideas.
