Martin, put it into context. we are trying to figure out why the pilots never communicated with the tower, given the information. the reason the new york times has this report is because they say they know the acars monitoring system recorded the strokes were in there. assuming the system was still up and working which is how they got this reporting, what is the reason they wouldn t be communicating with the tower if it was such a casual change to make? well, i mean, it would imply there s obviously some effort by whoever made the course change. they re shutting down the transponder. the plane is no longer pinging on radar. then the next thing they would do later shut down the acars system. we know this information came from the acars system still active. a short time later, it went off. we don t know where the plane is is now. that s absolutely correct. ....

Again sorry go ahead. it s in terms of keeping this, what we believe the sequence of events were. transponder is off. one line of communication is gone. that s why the tower isn t hearing anything. they make the adjustment, recorded by the acars system. it later goes off for some reason. does that give you insight as to whether they were dealing with a situation or did this intentionally? does this help or no? does the course change indicate they did it intentionally? that they were dealing with a situation they couldn t control like the transponder went off by itself or are systems separate to it doesn t lead you to conclusion? no, no. the transponder and course change are completely separate. the course change indicates somebody did that intentionally. it has nothing to do with the transponder, completely separate ....

Layfolks like me? procedures are to turn on the transponder right before we take off and then we push it off off we land. i don t see any reason to turn it off en route at all. it sends out a signal so the air traffic come can see where you are. have you ever had an occasion where you lost a transponder for a reason where there was some kind of mechanical difficulty that would take it out? i have, however, we have backups. if one side went out, the other side started working. i ve never had a case where it didn t work. okay. so, so here is the issue as i see it, ross. you say we don t know anything. we do know a few things, right? and that set of facts bring us nowhere. i want you to respond to what latane was saying, this process of inference folks are doing which is coincidence, coincidence, coincidence. is it not the case that catastrophic crashes, in this day and age, the product of a string of unlikely events ....

The new information helps us paint a better picture for flight 370. we know they left at 12:41 in the morning and at 1:07, the on board aircraft communications addressing and reporting system, acars, sent what would be it s last signal. at 1:19, the co-pilot makes the final call to air traffic controllers, all right, good night. at 1:21, the transponder is shut off. at 1:28, the thai military picks up an unknown signal traveling away from flight 370s original path to beijing. they loose that signal when it travels over the strait of malacca. nearly 45 minutes later, the malaysian military detects the missing plane, which es supposed to land at bay jieijing at 6:30. ....

Happened. joining me now is cnn analyst mary schiavo. thank you very much for tab heing the i ing taking the time. ip flight 370 that change from the programming was made 12 minutes at least 12 minutes, i should put that qualifier on there before someone in the cockpit said all right, good nooist. the last known communication with the ground. as we ve already reported, there was nothing suspect in the communications between the pilots and what was happening on the ground. we now nope that 12 minutes before that finish this flight changed direction. what does that say to you? that s pretty significant because in that last communication, that was their opportunity to tell someone that something was wrong. they had an intruder in the cockpit. there is a code that most airlines have a verbal code if you want put in the hijack code in your transponder, there are words you can say verbally to give a clue you ve been hijacked. you certainly would have let somebody know if you had smoke ....
