Ditching. but it s pretty hard to ditch in the water at night. so i can t i m not exactly sure at that time after that much flying if they were in daylight conditions or darkness. that would be a key thing. no question. miles, let me bring another question from a viewer. this one asks, if military radar was picking up a plane without a transponder, why didn t it raise any flags to deploy help? so that that famous malaysian radar data that saw a plane going across there but not identifying itself? or why weren t fighters scrambled. there s a lot of questions there. i think the various governments that might have picked up this primary target, meaning no transponder, on a military radar system, and then there was no response, i think they re a little reluctant to talk about that as you can imagine. it might, for one thing, tell the world about some exploitable holes in their system. or, perhaps, a lack of responsiveness in their air defenses. and that s probably why we re not getti ....

Cockpit conversations are only saved to a recorder? is that really the state of technology today? i believe so. once they leave air traffic control ability to communicate with the ground and they are off over an ocean, i don t know who else they can talk to. we have time for one quick question, i want to bring to miles if i can. this is something that has come up in a lot of our conversations, why is it that a cockpit ecar system of sending data back to the ground can be shut down for any reason? you know jimmy get repeated questions why can you turn off the transponder? you don t want something that you can t turn off? what if it is burning? good answer. ....

Hurry. at 1:21 a.m., the plane s transponder goes silent. when you turn that off, it s like lights are out. so there s no more voice communication. and no signal to air traffic control with the plane s location, speed, and altitude. it could have been physically turned off. there could have been a circuit breaker pulled. or there could have been some kind of catastrophic failure on the plane which caused an electrical disruption. then the 777 makes an unexpected left turn heading west and way off course. what we see is a quick turn almost 180-degree turn back toward land. according to a source close to the investigation, military radar then shows the plane dropping and flying as low as 12,000 feet. the control at the other end ....

the captain boosts the massive engines. the plane roars into the sky. its altimeter tracking its climb through 5,000 feet, then 10,000 feet. now airborne, air traffic ro controllers pick up the flight. they re going to see you on their radar because you have a squawk code in your transponder which basically turns your simple radar return into something that has a lot of information on it. it includes the flight number and the speed and the altitude. coming up to 17,000 feet. this is malaysia here. and this is vietnam here. there s cambodia on the left side. as the plane reaches its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet, the pilots can relax a lili little. so can the passengers like paul weeks and philip wood. it s 1:19 in the morning. a voice from the cockpit ....
