here on the ground we're on a street called elm street. you walk this way. it's a small country road just north of interstate 40, and about a mile down this way, this entire small road, is flooded out by water. just over here over the last few hours we saw three swift water rescue teams deployed boats out in their -- out into this water and just beyond these tree lines here, kate, there were a number of families who were trapped in their homes. ten people in all, including four children were pulled here to dry land this morning. we spoke with several of these family members who say they went to bed last night and heavy rainfall started pouring overnight and when they woke up about 5:00 this morning central time, they found themselves on a little island. they were surrounded by water, and that's when they started calling for help. it takes several hours for all of these rescue teams to get to these homes. they are behind these tree lines, so it's impossible to see here at this point. those families say it was a
control. a major winter storm expected to hit the midwest and the northeast today, and tomorrow. bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and ice which could lead to slick roads, power outages, and a lot of damage along tree lines. let's bring in meteorologist adam klotz and the fox extreme weather center. adam? >> hey there, harris. this is a real mess and it will include some flooding. this is the set up allowing it to happen. a big area of warm air. that's where their brain is. everything surrounding it -- and you can kind of make a bad, that's where the ice and eventually it will turn into snow. you can see it in our satellite and radar where it follows that exact same path. heavy rain stretching from pittsburgh back towards nashville. all areas we can see flooding. outside of that we are talking about snow and ice. ice may end up being the biggest problem. our winter storm watch come everything in green -- that is flood warnings. everything in the pink and the blue color, those are winter storm warnings and advisories. a large area we are talking about, most of the system now running up to the northeast. that's where i think the ice is
and what you are doing down there. >> i'm down here at the base camp for the florida fish and wild commission. there are officers here that save people's lives. the night of the storm which is almost two weeks ago now, in the middle of a downed tree lines, downed power lines, they came out and started saving people's lives. they did rescues all night long and they saved a lot of people's lives. i'm having dinner with them just thanking them for what they have done. i have 4,000 members of the national guard that i've called up, thousands of people from all sorts of stage and see the here. we have 67,000 people without power, and my job right now is organizing state, federal and local efforts to make sure every family gets all that they deserve and all that they need to get back to our normal life as fast as we can and that's
>> all right. we lost brian todd. brian todd is in wilmington. again, he's been -- he's also been able to witness some of those rescues that have been happening. brian also witnessing some flooding as well. i got a chance to go out with storm chasers and also with police to survey some of the neighborhoods around myrtle beach, and some -- there are some areas that are bad, but considering they fared well. i should say worse than others is a better way of putting it. there was some flooding, there were some downed tree lines. there were some power lines that were down as well. and then so we got brian todd back i think. brian, can you hear me? do we have you back? no brian todd. listen, we're going to continue on here. we're going to talk to some of the business owners who have having to deal with this, having to deal with the loss of money, also being displaced.
horrific for so many of our residents and first responders. >> and mayor, somewhat of a surprise, i mean, the winds were just ferocious. it wasn't supposed to get hit as hard as it did. >> well, the nature of storms is that they do what they want to do and this storm took a quick turn and that's why we teach our residents and encourage them to be vigilant and prepared and fortunately most people here in daytona beach listened and took the warning and never let their guard down. >> absolutely. so thankful for that. any sense of the damage so far to daytona beach? >> well, the damage is not as extreme as it could have been. tree lines, we do have some troubles and problems on our beachside, but overall, the damage is not as bad as it was say during matthew or storms of the past. so we're very fortunate. >> we had reports of emergency rescues in daytona beach early
trucks. whatever it might take to get people to shelters that have been set up a little further south of where we are, but this is a military-style vehicle filled up with people there in the back. so we are seeing this repeatedly here along the interstate, and this is an area we've talked to various people behind the tree lines that you see. it's hard to make out standing here on the interstate. the roads are impassable. hence, woo you need the boats to get into these neighborhoods. i've talked to a number of people who say, one gentleman had come from a mobile home neighborhood back in this direction where you're looking toward. that was about an hour and a half ago. he believed there were still about 1,000 people or so trapped in that neighborhood and the water was getting to the top of the home there's. spoke with another woman, you saw, fredricka, a little while ago, sitting on their rooftop in a neighborhood of people sitting on rooftops. some rescued by host guard
there are scores of bayous in downtown houston and they flood. i can't show you now because the sun is not even up, but it's over those tree lines. the bayou like a low lying almost river creek area running under this underpass goes behind me. that's why the underpass dips. and it goes back around. so, we are just at the very beginning for our viewers that are waking up seeing this. this is a story. the flash flood warning expected to last through tuesday, guys. abby: griff jenkins live for us. expecting maybe up to 20 inches of rain there in houston. we want to go over to matt finn. if you want to get a sense how strong these winds are and how tough the current are go to matt finn who has been covering this all night long. matt, this has now been downgraded to a category -- did we just lose him? we might have. clayton: there is matt. abby: storms downgraded to category 1. you look where you are though it has only gotten progressively worst just
the north. it starts going behind the tree lines or behind that broom. we do know the u.p. official mentioned there were teams out here. we do see a nm of officials that are walking up and down the rail line. they are kind of tucked behind sop of the cars. i have seen five or six different people here since we arrived a short while ago. we can also tell you that this is the water. it was rushing from the other side of that train line back over this way. we have seen that on the other side of interstate 45, that that creek that the water has come out of its banks has been rushing with an incredible amount of intensity. we saw that on the other side of the interstate where the water is now rushing and flowing extremely heavily. you can imagine what kind of force the water had here a short
black last seen running towards the swamp. >> reporter: officers responding tried to quickly set up a perimeter. >> the officer told us and came to the door again and said look all your doors because we think they are in the woods. >> reporter: and part of what made this search so very difficult is just half a mile away from where the shooting happened you can see all the woods here. in fact, policemen a lot of times conconcentrating on this area trying to make sure someone wasn't trying to slip out using the wood line and very close. residential areas just like this one that had people on inside and very worried for their safety. >> we love this area. we like being in the private area back here and they have something like this happen. i mean, it's literally right across there that it happened and -- and, you know, it is, it's scary. >> reporter: by air you can see what officers were dealing with. you can see what's known as a chain of lakes that's wrapped this community, marsh land and inlets that bleed into other waterways with homes covered by dense tree lines and also many homes here are not occupied
