Abstract
Learning from feedback is essential for daily functioning, with factors that impact learning having implications for healthy and clinical populations. Reinforcement learning appears impaired across the psychosis continuum, with deficits reported in patients with psychotic disorders as well as high schizotypes from the general population. Stress can impair learning, and sensitivity to stress is present along the psychosis continuum. The aim of the present study was to understand if stress impairs reinforcement learning in those at the lower end of the psychosis continuum. We investigated both naturalistic stress in everyday life using daily hassles (Study 1: n = 70; 31% male, M age = 22.67 years) and acute psychosocial stress using the Trier Social Stress Test (Study 2: n = 57; 32% male, M age = 22.43 years). In the presence of naturalistic stress, learning did not differ across schizotypes. However, under acute psychosocial stress, high schizotypes experienced impaired lear
Daily supplementation with a high dose of omega-3 fatty acids may help slow the effects of aging by suppressing damage and boosting protection at the cellular level during and after a stressful event, says a new study.
Researchers at The Ohio State University reported that omega-3 supplementation at a dose of 2.5 grams per day for four months blocked the stress-related decreases in the activity of telomerase (an enzyme that rebuilds telomeres) and anti-inflammatory cellular signaling.
In addition, a lower dose (1.25 grams per day), was associated with reductions in overall levels of the stress hormone cortisol and IL-6 (a pro-inflammatory cytokine) levels in 138 sedentary, overweight, middle-aged men and women, according to findings published in
DuPont launches new probiotic to reduce stress DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences has launched HOWARU Calm, a probiotic aimed at helping dietary supplement manufacturers decrease the cycle of consumer stress.
Surveys suggest 65% of adults worldwide indicate stress is a regular part of their daily lives. Prolonged stress can negatively affect mood, sleep and digestive health.
HOWARU Calm is the most recent addition to DuPont’s HOWARU portfolio and is shown to manage the psychological response to perceived stress.
“Too much stress, or daily chronic stress has become more prevalent in today’s society and can seriously impact our mental and physical well-being and overall health,” said Dr Elaine Patterson, senior R&D scientist, DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences.
