party, as you saw in kansas, are horrified and don't agree with them. so it is an overall trend of the drifting extremism of the extreme right, and it's indicative of a lot of challenges in this country. >> what are these trigger bans that are set to go in effect, what do they practically mean for women in those states and the surrounding areas? >> it is interesting, the breaking news on i.d. idaho, a good news, the department of justice did intervene and a federal court did say that idaho's ban could move forward but with health of the mother restrictions, with the health of the mother exceptions. so it's a step. but the challenge pragmatically, if you put yourself in the shoes of a person in idaho, who is faced with abortion, unless they can prove that they followed that restriction, and they can get a committee of doctors and a hospital and you've seeing the stories, looking at deciding to deem that case an exception, a ban is still a ban without exception, right?

supreme court upended roe v. wade — the landmark ruling that established the constitutional right to abortion in the united states. since then some 21 million women have lost access to nearly all elective abortion in their home states. when roe v wade was overturned, many states already had laws designed to be automatically triggered when the ruling no longer applied. at least 12 states have banned most abortions through those laws in the past two months. and as of today, three more trigger bans take effect in texas, tennessee and idaho. north dakota will follow on friday. similar bans in 5 more states have been temporarily blocked by the courts. and in the case of idaho, a federaljudge has blocked the state from enforcing a ban in cases where the pregnant woman's health is in danger, after the biden administration sued the state. cecile richards is the former president of planned parenthood — a non—for—profit organisation that provides reproductive health care in the us and around the world.
