A total of $114 million in debt relief is coming to five Michigan school districts after legislation signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer this week. One of the school systems that will have debt relieved is Muskegon Heights.
Marianne Darnell fills a vacancy left by Julius Muhammad, who was elected and set to take his seat on the Board in January.
It comes after the Muskegon Heights Public School Academy board did not complete a corrective action plan to address student education and teacher staffing issues.
According to a news release, the decision was based in part on the “failure” of the academy system board to provide a plan meant to address several issues impacting students.
For the second night in a row, it was standing room only as Muskegon Heights school leaders met to discuss ongoing complaints in the district.
