Fairfield NJ shooting: What local pastor heard, saw that night

The charges against Dawkins are only allegations. He has not been convicted of any crimes connected to Saturday’s shooting. Keene, at a Trinity member s request, met at the church Sunday with the woman who hosted the party.  She came over, we talked for a bit, we prayed with her, Keene said. I didn t know her. I ve heard her name, but I ve never made that connection with her. That session prompted the parishioner and party host to invite Keene to the site of the shooting after investigators released the home. There, a clean-up was under way.  So I went over, and as we re walking up the driveway there were all these cars sitting there and she said, I don t know who these cars belong to. What are we going to do? Keene said. I told her ‘let s not worry about that right now. Let s clean up your house, clean up your yard.’

Fairfield pastor describes scene at mass shooting

View Comments FAIRFIELD TWP. - The speakers boomed late into the night Saturday as Rev. Michael Keene prepped his Sunday service for the congregation of Trinity A.M.E. Church. I kept hearing the music, kept hearing the music and it kept getting louder and louder, Keene recalled Monday from inside the church annex. The sound was reverberating from a birthday party at a residence just one-tenth of a mile from Trinity A.M.E on Route 49.  As the clock approached 11:30 p.m., Keene remembers hearing what he thought were a series of fireworks being set off.  I said, All right, if there s fireworks they re going to end soon. Good, we can get some sleep, Keene thought. But then I said, No, wait, that doesn t sound like fireworks,  and that s when I counted like nine shots right after that. And then it was over.
