Researchers on Tuesday published a serious warning for Android device owners to watch out for. Eight dangerous apps have been found on Google Play Store that could drain your bank account and even bypass two-factor authentication. Users, if you have any of these apps installed on your phone, you need to delete them immediately.
That s according to Check Point Research, who explained that what they discovered is a malware dropper, dubbed Clast82, which was spreading via the eight apps. What s scary about the dropper is it has been designed to deliver financial malware. The dropper was also able to avoid being caught by Google Play Protect. ....

ZLoader Malware Hidden in Encrypted Excel File

A fake invoice email delivers ZLoader hidden in an Excel document. (Source: Forcepoint)
A new phishing campaign distributes ZLoader malware using advanced delivery techniques that demonstrate sophisticated understanding of Microsoft Office document formats and techniques, the security firm Forcepoint X-Labs reports.
The phishing emails use an invoicing lure, but the message varies, perhaps dealing with a bill already processed or describing new taxation rules from the Internal Revenue Service, the researchers say.
If the phishing victims enable macros in a Microsoft Word attachment, they trigger the download of an encrypted Excel sheet in which the final malware payload is hidden, Forcepoint X-Labs researchers say in their new report. ....

Researchers Describe a Second, Separate SolarWinds Attack

Russian hackers apparently weren t the only ones targeting SolarWinds customers. An attack last year by the Spiral hacking group, believed to be based in China, against one organization used Supernova malware that targeted a vulnerability in SolarWinds Orion network monitoring software, according to the Secureworks Counter Threat Unit.
In January, SolarWinds issued an advisory on that vulnerability, CVE-2020-10148, but it said no exploits had been discovered. SolarWinds issued a patch on Dec. 23, 2020. But Spiral exploited the vulnerability earlier, says Mike McLellan, director of intelligence at Secureworks.
The attack using the Supernova malware that Secureworks investigated is not related to the much broader SolarWinds supply chain attack, Secureworks says. That separate supply chain attack is tied to a Russian cyberespionage campaign that leveraged a backdoor installed in an update of the Orion network monitoring platform, investigators say. So ....
