Scotland and Wales have vowed to look into how they can keep the benefits of the Erasmus study exchange scheme - which the UK left as a result of the Brexit trade deal.
Richard Lochhead, the Scottish minister for further and higher education, said the UK’s replacement Turing scheme was a “poor shadow” of the EU programme.
As part of the post-Brexit trade deal, the UK ended participation in the Erasmus scheme, which gives financial support for students to study abroad in all EU countries and 27 others – such as Norway, Iceland, Tunisia and Israel. ....

Holyrood ministers are exploring options to keep Scotland involved in the EU s Erasmus programme.
The scheme, which offers opportunities to study abroad, is ending in the UK because of Brexit, with a new and cheaper programme to be offered.
The Scottish and Welsh governments wanted to continue full participation in Erasmus after Brexit.
However, Higher Education Minister Richard Lochhead said the UK government had ruled that out.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson had previously assured MPs that Brexit posed no threat to the Erasmus+ scheme, but the UK government later decided the programme was too expensive and withdrew. ....

Ministers in Scotland and Wales say they will work together to explore how students in their countries can benefit from the Erasmus exchange programme, despite the UK leaving due to Brexit.
The Scottish and Welsh governments say the proposed replacement for Erasmus falls short of what the EU programme offered.
The UK Government’s alternative – named the Turing Scheme after the codebreaker Alan Turing – will receive around £100 million in the next academic year.
Ministers in the devolved administrations say this “pales in comparison” to Erasmus, while Turing reduces support for colleges and schools. ....

SCOTTISH and Welsh ministers have released a joint statement vowing to explore how both countries can continue to benefit from the EU s Erasmus scheme.
They said the UK Government s decision to leave the student exchange programme following Brexit will reduce opportunities for all learners and cut support for the most deprived communities .
Prime Minister Boris Johnson previously told MPs there was no threat to Erasmus, which offers opportunities to study abroad.
However last month he announced the UK would pull out of the programme and replace it with its own scheme named after mathematician Alan Turing. ....
