Ein Albtraum für viele Anwohner. Der türkische Präsident ist bekannt für seine Vorliebe für gigantische Bauprojekte. Einen neuen Flughafen, die größte Moschee der Türkei oder einen Tunnel, der unter dem Bosporus verläuft - all diese Megaprojekte hat Recep Tayyip Erdogan in kürzester Zeit aus dem Boden stampfen lassen. Doch das aktuelle Projekt - der Kanal Istanbul - spielt in einer ganz anderen Liga. Die türkische Regierung startet nichts Geringeres, als eine Art zweiten Bosporus parallel zu der berühmten Meerenge, die Europa und Asien trennt und durch die 16-Millionen-Metropole Istanbul schlängelt. An diesem Samstag soll der Grundstein für eine erste Brücke über den künftigen Kanal gelegt werden. Erdogan will an der Zeremonie teilnehmen.

Turkey's approval last month of plans to develop a shipping canal in Istanbul comparable to the Panama or Suez canals has opened up debate about the 1936 Montreux Convention. In their letter, 104 retired admirals said it was "worrying" to open the Montreux treaty up to debate, calling it an agreement that "best protects Turkish interests".
