potentially having to vote for what they would consider to be a bad deal. is that how you feel? >> wolf, no. first of all, it's the republicans who have manufactured this crisis. they were paying the bills. the president has an obligation to keep the country afloat, to keep the economy working. he's the only one with that responsibility. members of congress can come to cnn, go on the floor. he feels that burden and that's why he's trying to work a good solution. >> are you a no congressman if this deal includes work requirements for various social safety net programs? >> i don't think it will include the work requirements. >> but if it does. what if it does? >> should not be there. i believe the final deal will not have them. the democrats have been clear, not just progressives, democrats, we cannot increase work requirements. we already have work requirements. what they're talking about is
to listen and watch what former president trump told our kaitlyn collins at cnn's recent town hall. >> when it comes to your documents, did you ever show those classified documents to anyone? >> not really. i would have the right to. by the way -- >> what do you mean not really? >> not that i can think of. >> let me get your thoughts on that. that doesn't seem to line up or does it line up with what you're reporting? it seems to line up. >> i didn't hear a no there, did you? >> no. >> not really. not that i recall, but i would have the right to do that. i mean, that was a very interesting answer and what federal prosecutors have learned from other witnesses is that he did show classified documents and that he did keep some out in his office so his answer to kaitlin there was non-committal. there might be reason for that. >> laura, what does that say about where the special counsel, jack smith's, criminal investigation stands?

ongoing threat to democracy. and in ukraine cnn is speaking with the anti-putin rich shan fighters claiming responsibility for cross border attacks. they say they're using american military vehicles during the raids. we'll get reaction from a key white house official, john kirby. welcome to our viewers here in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." let's begin with new ve developments in the special counsel's criminal investigation into donald trump's handling of classified documents. josh, tell us what you and your colleagues are now learning. >> right, wolf. what we're learning is that one day before federal authorities came to mar-a-lago last june to pick up classified documents in return for a subpoena that video
armed forces. some of them have very far right links but all of them are dedicated to overthrowing vladimir putin. i think one of the key things about this raid, wolf, is all about keeping the russians off balance, trying to provoke responses from the russians, probe their weaknesses ahead of what is developing into a summer offensive by the ukrainians, wolf. >> sam kiley, stay safe over there. thank you very much. joining us now, the national security council coordinator for strategic communications, john kirby. thanks for joining us. how do you respond to the russian fighter telling cnn they used american-made vehicles, they say bought on the open market, in their attack on russia? >> certainly can't confirm those reports, wolf, that they bought these things on the open market. what i can confirm is we've made it clear to the ukrainians that we don't want to see u.s.-made, u.s.-supplied equipment used on russian soil to attack russia. what we are providing is a lot

fighting for a country that isn't theirs. one year into this war, neither is second-guessing himself. >> not everyone gets that choice. for moore it was more of those serendipitous points where you don't have a choice? >> no regrets? >> no regret, yeah. >> reporter: jake, jason mann who goes by doc says given the resilience and ingenuity he's seen from the ukrainians it's hard not to believe in the ukrainians at this point. now, the unit is expecting the russians to try to mount something around this anniversary. they do not know, of course, what is coming. they are bracing themselves but given all the failures they've seen from the rugs so far they don't appear to be particularly concerned about this anniversary, jake. >> all right, alex in dnipro, thanks so much. at 9:00 p.m. cnn will mark the one-year since russia invaded ukraine with a special town hall hosted by fareed
crimes. so possibly this testimony, which can be used in another court, could seal the deal of being guilty to all of these crimes. >> financial crimes, right? >> financial crimes. >> yeah. interesting. jean casarez, thanks so much. let's discuss this with cnn legal analyst joey jackson, who's also a defense attorney and trial attorney. misty maris. joey, let me start with you. we just heard prosecutors questioning alex murdaugh about his finances and possible financial crimes. how is that relevant to the murder accusations? >> well, i'll tell you, jake, how they want to make it relevant and what they are doing, the prosecutors, is saying he's a liar, he's a cheat, he can't be trusted and you should not at all take whatever he says at face value or anything else. understand taking a step back, jake, what the motivation is for him to testify. now we're in the war room. you're going to testify, says his lawyer to the client. number one, he has to talk about motive. defeat the prosecutors' motive. this is a guy who loved his wife, loved his family, would have no basis for doing --
let's go straight to cnn's jean casarez. jean, what's your takeaway from murdaugh's testimony today, especially the cross-examination from the prosecutors? >> well, let's start with the cross-examination since they're in it right now. this is a murder trial, just as you've described, but you would think on this cross-examination so far that it was a financial crimes trial. he is charged with multiple financial crimes, and it was not supposed to come into this case, but it did. the judge allowed it in. and this is the prosecutor's motive for murder, that all of this had been happening for years and all of a sudden he's confronted with one aspect of it and that night he went and killed his wife and his son so suddenly he would be the victim and there wouldn't be any further looking at these financial crimes, at least for the moment. so that's why the prosecutor is going into this. but he's defusing every question by admitting everything. and he hasn't pled guilty or not guilty to any of these financial
