Weekly unemployment claims stay high as claims refiled | Vermont Business Magazine

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine Regular weekly unemployment claims continue at a very high level as claimants were required to refile. Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington said last that the pandemic hit one year ago. The annual refiling then triggered the increase. However, initial claims are nearly 15,000 fewer than the same time last year.

On April 3, 2020, the Labor Department reported 1,761 new weekly filings, an increase of 250. This week s filings, which are a recent high, are, however, 14,713 fewer than the same time last year.
Nationally, claims unexpectedly rose back over 700,000. These remain historically high numbers. ....

by Timothy McQuiston, Vermont Business Magazine Regular weekly unemployment claims nearly doubled last week as claimants were required to refile. Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington said on Friday that the pandemic hit one year ago. The annual refiling then triggered the increase.
On March 28, 2020, the Labor Department reported 1,511 new weekly filings, an increase of 729. This week s filings, which are a recent high, are, however, 13,122 fewer than the same time last year.
Nationally, claims unexpectedly rose back over 700,000. These remain historically high numbers.

Regular weekly UI claims in Vermont had been edging down since late January. Governor Scott signed the Executive Order March 13, 2020 and closed restaurants and bars after lunch on March 17. ....

Weekly unemployment claims fall slightly but still elevated | Vermont Business Magazine

Regular weekly UI claims in Vermont last week decreased by 13 to 990 (up 544 from the same time last year, which was before the pandemic hit).
Claims had fallen for five consecutive weeks before jumping up again two weeks ago.
As for ongoing jobless claims, for the week ending February 20, 2021, the Labor Department processed 13,185 claims, up 95 from the previous week and 7,520 more than the same time last year.
As for further comparison, initial Vermont claims for the week of March 21, 2020 (the first full week of the pandemic in Vermont), were 3,784, up 3,125 from the week of March 14.
Labor Commissioner Harrington has said at Governor Scott s media briefings that the new federal stimulus and unemployment money will help Vermonters, even though the unemployment rate is on paper at the same level as it was just before the pandemic led to historic unemployment levels. ....
