BRUNSWICK COUNTY – The Brunswick County Schools Board of Education is asking Gov. Roy Cooper to move school employees up the vaccine list. The board passed a resolution Tuesday evening requesting that the governor include public school employees in Group 2, which currently consists of anyone 65 or older. Cooper urged all 115 school districts across North Carolina to resume in-person learning in grades K-12 this month. He pointed to data and science released recently as promising and safe for students, teachers and staff to return to classrooms: K-5 in Plan A, and middle and high school in Plan B. “We’ve learned much more about this virus since last March,” Cooper said. “It’s time to get our children back in the classroom.”

Union Elementary has six active positive cases of COVID and had to transition to remote learning starting Feb. 1 through Feb. 15. Students are expected to resume classes as normal on Feb. 16. Seamans said those who tested positive are students or staff members and cannot be identified due to privacy reasons. The county believed students from both schools attended programs outside of the school, which could be the source of the outbreak.
