United Center COVID Vaccination Appointments Open For 5 Chicago Zip Codes, Close to General Public

An online booking platform, including a voucher code, is being shared with members of these ZIP codes, according to officials. For those attempting to book without a voucher, the appointment will be canceled.
Vaccinations will be offered at no cost and insurance is not required, nor will it be requested at the site.
Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said that some communities, such as North Lawndale and Humboldt Park, are already part of the Protect Chicago Plus initiative, which works to get vaccine to areas of the city that are under vaccinated.
Majority of vaccination appointments at the United Center mass vaccination site, she said, should be going to Chicago and suburban Cook County residents.

Chicago COVID vaccine: United Center vaccination site opens after brief delay, scheduling confusion

The United Center and Des Plaines mass vaccination sites opened for appointments Thursday, and tens of thousands were snatched up in mere hours.
Many United Center appointments remain open. Of the 110,000 total appointments, officials said Tuesday only 40,000 were booked by Illinois residents 65 and older, and only 10,000 by Chicagoans in 1B plus. The rest, set aside after most senior appointments, went to people outside the city.
"We have to do this in a way that is consistent with equity, and that's critically important," Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.
Officials say the 50,000 unfilled appointments are not yet publicly available. Instead, Chicago and Cook County officials are conducting targeted outreach. The city is prioritizing five zip codes: 60608 on the Near West Side, and 60652, 60620, 60619 and 60649 on the South Side.

United Center Mass Vaccination Site Opens Tuesday

While some have secured appointments, obtaining one has turned into a difficult task for many residents.
Chicagoan Bill Jensen shared his frustrating experience from this past weekend when he got three quarters of the way through the sign-up process. He was suddenly locked out when it came time to select an appointment time.
"I’m not shocked that it’s hard to get appointments," Jensen said. "It’s a limited resource and a ton of demand. Having said that, the program stunk!"
Zocdoc, the site on which registration is conducted, was plagued by glitches Sunday as a large number of people sought to obtain appointments.

Chicago COVID vaccine: United Center mass vaccination site changes cause confusion as IL expands eligibility

Even Chicago residents are having issues signing up.
Bernie Ferro's daughter tried helping her make an appointment Sunday to no avail.
"I imagine there are a lot of people out there frustrated with this. Especially with the United Center," Ferro said. "They made this big thing so they could take more people and it is a headache to everybody."
ZocDoc, the website used to book appointments, went down when registration opened at 4 p.m. Sunday, then reappeared with changes asking people to confirm their location.
However, residents who live in the city couldn't book an appointment due to the crash and by the time it was back up, the slots were gone.

Chicago COVID vaccine: United Center COVID vaccine now only available to Chicago residents, causing confusion, frustration as IL expands eligibility

CHICAGO (WLS) -- All appointments at the United Center mass COVID vaccination site are, for now, limited to Chicago and suburban Cook County only, officials announced Sunday.
As of Monday, only Chicago residents could make appointments because only the city's website was offering them. Officials blamed FEMA for the last-minute changes, which have left the city, county and state scrambling and many people very confused about what they're supposed to do.
Crews were very busy at the United Center Monday getting the site ready for Tuesday's opening as a vaccine distribution center. Barricades went up with new signage to direct people where to go.

United Center COVID Vaccine Eligibility Changes, Causing Confusion and Frustration

The last-minute change sparked confusion and frustration for some who had been waiting to book appointments at the new site. The ZocDoc website also appeared to have a glitch on Sunday, showing appointments that were available but not allowing users to book those appointments. Some also reported that they were able to book appointments that were later canceled without explanation.
The change in eligibility was made based on additional Federal Emergency Management Agency guidance, Gov. J.B. Pritzker's office said in a statement, to "ensure equity in vaccine distribution and that the people and communities most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic have access to the vaccine."

Zocdoc Glitches Plague Registration for United Center COVID Vaccine Appointments

"On Sunday afternoon, some users experienced difficulty booking a vaccination at the United Center," a spokesman for the company said in a statement.
"Zocdoc identified and resolved the root issue in less than one hour, and Chicago residents were successfully able to book vaccinations, reaching peak booking rates of more than 750 bookings per minute," the statement continued. "Due to high demand, our current allotment of United Center vaccine availability was quickly fully booked."
"We apologize to anyone who was unable to secure an appointment at the United Center, and we will continue to add new appointments to our platform from Chicago vaccine providers as they become available. We look forward to helping more eligible individuals find and book a COVID-19 vaccination," Zocdoc said.
