Interns in the Special Collections Research Center Learning Lab get to work with rare collections related to areas of interest in their own studies. LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 9, 2021) As the end of the spring semester draws near, University of Kentucky Libraries would like to remind undergraduate students about two special opportunities available annually through the libraries to help showcase and enhance their research, including the Learning Lab Internship and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Scholarship. LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 2, 2021) University of Kentucky faculty who would like to replace a traditional textbook with alternative course content in the academic year 2021-22 are welcome to submit a proposal to UK Libraries’ Alternative Textbook Grant Program. The grants will support adoption or adaptation of existing open textbooks and creation of new course content. UK Libraries has held five rounds of the Alternative Textbook Grant Program from 2016 to 2020. Thirty-three of the funded courses had been taught by August 2020 with a total enrollment exceeding 10,000 students and cumulative estimated savings over $1.27 million for the enrolled students. In other words, each student saved about $125 on average thanks to the use of alternative course content in place of traditional textbooks. ....

(Feb. 1, 2021) The University of Kentucky’s Martin Luther King Center, in collaboration with units across campus, will host a variety of events and programming, most of which will be virtual, to celebrate Black History Month this February. While this year’s observance looks different than past year’s due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the observation of Black History Month will, nonetheless, allow the history and culture of Black Americans to be centered in recognition of past and present challenges, struggles and achievements. “Since the late 60s and officially in 1976, Black History Month has been a long-awaited time for the corporate celebration of Black culture, Black stories and Black people,” said Chandler Frierson, UK senior and programming intern at the MLK Center. “With that narrative, this year’s Black History Month is a special month.
