Whitireia Student Wins Inaugural Māori And Pasifika Scholarship From Publisher Penguin Random House NZ

Wellingtonian Luke Finnigan has been awarded the
first ever Māori and Pasifika Publishing Scholarship thanks
to a collaboration with Whitireia Community Polytechnic Ltd
and Penguin Random House New Zealand
(PRH).
The scholarship offers funding for a
Māori or Pasifika student to study the Graduate
Diploma in Publishing at Whitireia. It also includes
travel to the Penguin Random House head office in Auckland
twice a year for hands-on experience in Aotearoa New
Zealand’s biggest local and international publishing
house.

Dodgy dealing tale of two cities


The Shoeshine column is the
NBR’s longest-running feature. It was launched during the euphoria leading up to the October 1987 sharemarket crash, which hit New Zealand harder than most. 
It was inspired by the legendary story about how, in the late summer of 1929, a shoeshine boy gave stock tips to Joseph Kennedy, a financier and father of John F Kennedy. Being a wise investor, Kennedy thought, “If shoeshine boys are giving stock tips, then it’s time to get out of the market.” 
Kennedy made a killing by selling his stocks before Wall Street collapsed in October 1929, eventually leading to the Great Depression of the 1930s. ....

Titled 
Where We Swim (Victoria University Press), the non-fiction text will be launched at Unity Books in Wellington on 11 March at 6pm (COVID-19 alert levels permitting). 
From beloved bays, beaches and rivers at home to the waters of Perth and the Peruvian Amazon, Dr Horrocks shares her reflections on a lifetime of swimming as a personal, embodied pleasure and a metaphor for interconnectedness with nature and each other. 
Part memoir, part travel and nature writing, the Wellington-based author says her book offers new angles on how we relate to the natural world. “I’d wanted to remember why it was we swam in the first place – to remember the pleasure of immersing in an element other than air,” she says. ....
