Bettie's ride - Harrison Daily

This story took place long ago, during the terrible and desperate times of the War Between the States here in the Ozarks. No property, indeed, no life was safe. With most of the young able-bodied men gone to fight, women, children, and old men were left to fend for themselves against marauders, bushwackers, thieves, cutthroats, in uniform and out, that roamed the Ozark hills “….like a roaring lion, looking who they may devour.” The written version of this story was done by Josephine (Joe) Wright Crump, and comes from archival materials at the University of Arkansas Library. I have not edited it, nor have I changed any spellings. Sentences are as they were written by Mrs.Wright; the language and dialect are of the type commonly spoken in that time long ago. Enjoy this story of how a young Ozark girl outsmarted a foraging party of Federals (Yankees) that descended upon the family farm, looking for anything they could get (steal), and saved her beloved pet horse!
