Re-imagining of LTC homes should include smaller homes, more space: UW prof

It's been long documented, the impact COVID-19 has had on long-term care in Ontario.
So in a post-pandemic world, a new paper is taking a look at changes to infrastructure that will be needed.
George Heckman, a professor in the University of Waterloo's School of Public Health and Health Systems, is a co-author and said when it comes to the sector, it all comes down to being more proactive instead of waiting for catastrophe.
He said looking at the infrastructure piece, large-scale home projects need to be a thing of the past, and encouraged having smaller, home-like settings.
"We have evidence from other studies that show that small homes are better for people in the long run," he said, "Better mental health, better physical function, better physical health."
