Solved. the u.s.s. grayback was sunk by a japanese bomber in 1934 with 80 sailors on board and never found until now. turns out the navy was looking in the wrong place. amateur researchers recently came across a japanese document that showed the submarine went down off okinawa about 100 miles from where they thought. now, a special veterans day salute for this performance.
