Creatives from the Biden-Harris campaign shared their experience conducting an online presidential campaign during the South by Southwest 2021 conference session “Politics x Design: How the Biden-Harris Creative Team Won the Election” on Tuesday.
Robyn Kanner, former senior creative adviser to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, talked to The Daily Texan about her design process.
The Daily Texan: How did you use your personal strengths to create unique creative content for the Biden-Harris campaign?
Robyn Kanner: I grew up hanging out with friends who were musicians, and I played guitar. I grew up in the woods in Maine. There wasn t much to do but play music, so I did that a lot. When it comes to design, I think of everything as songs. One of the things that I always look for when I m designing things is rhythm and how things are supposed to sound even if we re ....

Texas softball rallies in seventh inning to buck Cowgirls 5-2

“We knew it was going to be a tough (game) coming in to play,” head coach Mike White said. “We got down early and made a couple of mistakes.”

The Texas offense opened the game lacking its typical zeal. The Longhorns were unable to capitalize on a first-inning scoring opportunity when two runners got caught in a rundown after a failed double-steal.
After the game, White admitted the team made a handful of base-running mistakes.

The Longhorn defense also entered the game without their usual tenacity. Sophomore pitcher Shea O’Leary attempted to lead the team from the pitching circle but found the Cowgirl offense to be a competitive match at the plate. ....

TW: police brutality, violent imagery
Editor’s note: Because his first language is Portuguese, Lázaro Ramos spoke mostly in English and occasionally used a translator.
“Executive Order,” which premiered at South by Southwest 2021 on Tuesday, is Brazilian actor Lázaro Ramos’ directorial debut. The film is set in near-future Brazil, when the authoritarian government has just issued a new executive order deporting all Black citizens to Africa as an excuse to repay the debts of slavery.
The Daily Texan spoke to Ramos about the timeliness of his film and why he included a (mostly) happy ending.  ....

Janelle Monáe’s specially created SXSW music video for her song Turntables played at the beginning of South by Southwest 2021 keynote speaker Stacey Abrams’ conversation with author N.K. Jemisin, highlighting Abrams’ work against voter suppression.
Democratic politician and activist Abrams and Jemisin, author of “The City We Became,” discussed Tuesday how the power of storytelling can give citizens the blueprint to create the change they want to see in society.
“Center the narrative around the voter, the citizen, the person,” Abrams said. “If they can’t see themselves being victimized or benefiting, you give them a reason to not focus. Focus on centering the story around those communities who aren’t part of the narrative so they have a place to be heard.”  ....
