Uber donates 30,000 free rides to vaccine sites for CT residents

Uber donates 30,000 free rides to vaccine sites for CT residents
HARTFORD, Connecticut (WFSB) — In an effort to get as many people access to a COVID-19 vaccine, the United Way of Connecticut, Community Health Center, Inc. and Uber are coming together to provide free rides to vaccine sites.
Uber is donating 30,000 free rides for those who have limited access to transportation so that they can get to a COVID-19 vaccine appointment.
Connecticut residents can utilize this service to travel to and from appointments across the state.
“These Uber rides act as another tool in our Connecticut toolbox to maximize vaccine access to tens of thousands of Connecticut residents,” Gov. Ned Lamont said in a statement. “This resource and partnership will allow so many of our neighbors to get their shot without worrying how they will get to and from the vaccination site. I want to thank Uber and our Connecticut partners for forging this commitment.”

COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics Pivot After State, FDA Pause Use of Johnson & Johnson Shots

In New Haven, the pause on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine forced the city to delay yesterday's mobile clinic to today.
City and health officials said the remainder of the clinics scheduled for this week will go on as planned. They were all planning to use the Johnson & Johnson vaccine until the FDA put a pause on it.
Now, city leaders said they will be using the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.
The same goes for the upcoming eight mobile clinics scheduled in Hartford, including the one today next to City Hall.
Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC, explains what to monitor if you recently received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

CT COVID-19 Positivity Rate at 3.77%; 17 New Deaths Reported

Of the 29,670 new tests reported Tuesday, 1,118 came back positive.
The state continues efforts to make the COVID-19 vaccine available to any resident who wants it, though a decision to pause use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after reports of rare complications may lead to delays or cancellations at some clinics. The Connecticut Department of Public Health said roughly 100,000 Connecticut residents have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and there are no reports of serious adverse events.
The state will continue the vaccine rollout with Pfizer and Moderna during the pause. Those who were scheduled for Johnson & Johnson should contact their provider. Even if your appointment gets canceled, the state says there are still other appointments available.

During his briefing Thursday, Gov. Ned Lamont specifically identified several Connecticut towns and cities where the state is seeing COVID-19 hot spots. They are predominantly located in the Naugatuck Valley region.
The governor’s office said over the next few weeks they will be working very closely with local officials in the Waterbury and Naugatuck areas in an effort to curb an upward trend of infections.
“Not sure why this is happening, but we are paying particularly close attention to it,” said Lamont.
The list of towns, which also includes towns outside the Naugatuck Valley, includes Waterbury, Bethlehem, New Milford, Wolcott, Brookfield, Derby, Union, Seymour, Watertown, Naugatuck, Torrington, Thomaston and Haddam.

The list of towns, which also includes towns outside the Naugatuck Valley, includes Waterbury, Bethlehem, New Milford, Wolcott, Brookfield, Derby, Union, Seymour, Watertown, Naugatuck, Torrington, Thomaston and Haddam.
Topping the list is Waterbury. The state says they are seeing 69 positive cases per 100,000 people. Responding to the surge, Waterbury officials say they will be expanding hours at its vaccination clinics and are counting on assistance.
“We anticipate additional mobile units and support from the National Guard in terms of staff,” said Mack Demac, chief of staff for Waterbury Mayor Neil O’Leary.
The state said it is doing contact tracing but at this time it is not clear what is causing the uptick.
