On Sunday, February 7th low pressure formed off the North Carolina coast, moved northeast and deepened, hugging the Eastern Seaboard before scooting out into the Atlantic near Newfoundland the following day; after which a huge expanse of strong westerly winds developed on its southern flank northwest of the Azores.
