"To the moon safely we go": Barstool's Dave Portnoy buys $40k in SafeMoon crypto

(History in HD/Unsplash)
Another day in 2021, another celebrity causing a commotion about crypto on Twitter. Except this time it isn’t Elon Musk.
Dave Portnoy is no stranger to speaking his mind or to the world of investing—he even calls himself Davey Day Trader. So it shouldn’t come as a total surprise that on Monday the Barstool Sports founder announced his allegiance to SafeMoon, the latest meme asset—or “shitcoin”, as Portnoy likes to say—getting attention from the crypto community.
Portnoy put together a hilarious video of himself declaring his newfound devotion to SafeMoon—a community-driven DeFi token set to disrupt the financial world. But he also warned followers to “invest at their own risk”.

Thematic ETFs all the rage, offering easy, low-cost ways to put your money behind just about everything
By: Joel Schlesinger
Choose almost any investment idea and there’s an ETF for that.
Opinion
Hold on.
What’s an ETF, you might ask?
Well, it’s an exchange-traded fund, and it’s largely displaced mutual funds as a way for investors to purchase baskets of stocks for a small fee.
Often the fee is a 10th of mutual fund fee. As well, ETFs trade like stocks on exchanges.
Typically, they involve passive management. That means, generally, there is no investment manager picking stocks. Rather, ETF stock selection is often based on reflecting the index. For example, the world’s largest ETF is State Street’s SPDR S&P 500 ETF with about US$400 billion in assets under management, and it follows the performance of the S&P 500, for a management expense ratio (MER) of 0.09 per cent.

Novelty ETFs focus on life after the pandemic – here on Earth and in space

At the start of the pandemic, ETF providers launched work-from-home and streaming-service funds to capitalize on changes to how we live. Now, providers are putting forward funds based on what life could look like after the pandemic, including the return of travel and live sporting events.
Other new ETFs play on positive social media-generated market buzz and increased investor attention in areas such as clean energy, space exploration and bitcoin.
Both the recently launched Roundhill MVP ETF (MVP-A) – an U.S. ETF that invests in sports franchises, sporting-goods companies and facilities – and Canada’s Harvest Travel and Leisure Index ETF (TRVL-T) – which invests in large-cap travel companies – are a play on the post-pandemic recovery, says Daniel Straus, vice-president of ETFs and financial products research at National Bank Financial.

BUZZ Reaches Beyond Growth | Tactical Allocation Channel

By Coulter Regal, CFA, Associate Product Manager
When people first hear about an investment strategy that targets stocks with the most positive sentiment based on social media chatter and online discussions, they may be quick to assume that it is full of nothing but the latest growth or momentum stocks. However, a closer look at the strategy and holdings paints a different picture.
A Unique Blend of Styles and Stocks
Looking at the top holdings of
VanEck Vectors Social Sentiment ETF (BUZZ), you might see some of the expected names like Tesla, Apple, or Amazon, however, you can also find some rather unexpected names like Ford Motor, Boeing, or Walt Disney as well. This unique selection of stocks is created as a by-product of the online discussions people are having about a wide range of investments. Whether growth or value focused, momentum driven or contrarian, short-term or long-term, investors can be bullish on particular stocks belonging to any of these factors. Combine the style agnostic nature of sentiment, with a monthly rebalance and the result is a strategy comprised of a blend of styles that can shift as market environments and sentiment change.
