Iditarod Sled Dogs - Ultimate Performance Athletes Get Their Own Study

Dogs are often called "man's best friend," and rightly so because they never tell us we are wrong or interrupt us when we talk, are they are always happy to see us when we arrive home. Some dogs take friendship to a whole other level by pulling us 1,100 miles in a race under the harshest conditions.

Oklahoma names 3 new Health Dept. hires, including state epidemiologist

Oklahoman
Oklahoma has a new state epidemiologist — the fourth person to hold the role since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic — the Oklahoma State Department of Health announced Monday, along with two other new hires for positions within the agency.
Jolianne Stone will be the Health Department's new state epidemiologist, replacing Dr. Jared Taylor, who has held the position since August.
Stone previously served as Oklahoma's deputy state epidemiologist and had worked for Integris as an infection prevention manager. She has recently been part of the health department's briefings with reporters about COVID-19 and vaccinations in the state.
Taylor will move into a newly created role with the state health department: chief science officer.

Combination therapy may reduce influenza-associated morbidity and mortality

Combination therapy may reduce influenza-associated morbidity and mortality
A significant proportion of hospitalized patients with influenza develop complications of acute respiratory distress syndrome, driven by virus-induced cytopathic effects as well as exaggerated host immune response. Reporting in
The American Journal of Pathology, published by Elsevier, investigators have found that treatment with an immune receptor blocker in combination with an antiviral agent markedly improves survival of mice infected with lethal influenza and reduces lung pathology in swine-influenza-infected piglets. Their research also provides insights into the optimal timing of treatment to prevent acute lung injury.
Previously, the investigators found that an excessive influx of neutrophils, infection fighting immune cells, and the networks they create to kill pathogens, known as neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), contribute to acute lung injury in influenza infection. Formation of NETs by activated neutrophils occurs
