Union members voting on who should be next general secretary, with incumbent under pressure from all sides 

The UCU bureaucracy’s feigned outrage over anti-democratic legislation the trade unions have never challenged as a cover shutting down strikes it opposed from the very start.

On 13 November, Vicky Blake announced her candidacy for General Secretary of the University and College Union. Other candidates so far are Jo Grady (re-standing), Saira Weiner from the UCU Left/SWP, and Euan McGaughey, a law academic who brought a legal case over pension misevaluation. Vicky, a former Vice President and President of the union, is standing as an independent. She has a background in fighting casualisation, has recently championed solidarity with Ukrainian trade unionists, and has been a consistent left critic of the leadership and defender of union democracy.

With one dispute won but another floundering, some believe lack of strikes could actually benefit UK’s main academic union in latest talks with employers, but others are preparing to try to unseat the general secretary in an election that promises to be a ‘referendum on last five years’
