Over 500 expat students — who have had to leave private schools because of financial woes — are currently studying for free in Abu Dhabi’s first Virtual Charter School. On Wednesday, education authorities in the Capital explained how the programme works.
“The Virtual Charter School is open to students of all nationalities whose families have been financially impacted by Covid-19. This not-for-profit public-private partnership model offers alternative education delivery which redresses learning loss in a pandemic and provides an invaluable bridge for students to continue their education,” said Sara Musallam, chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (Adek).

Pre-K, kindergarten enrollment drops; Oklahoma education officials concerned

Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise
Public school enrollment has dropped in Oklahoma for the first time in 19 years, with 75% of the decrease attributed to fewer pre-K and kindergarten students, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
Data shows 4,734 fewer pre-K students and 2,381 fewer kindergarteners enrolled in 2020-21 than in 2019-20. This decrease suggests parents are choosing to delay the entry of their 4- and 5-year-olds into school, officials said.
“This pandemic has presented a multitude of challenges, and lower early childhood enrollment numbers tell us we will need to heighten our focus on early learning opportunities and strategic interventions to ensure these children have the prerequisite skills needed for reading and math,” State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister said.

Enrollment in Idaho’s K-12 public schools is down by nearly 3,200 students from last school year, despite unprecedented growth at virtual schools.
In all, 105 districts and charter schools lost students, numbers from the State Department of Education show. The 1 percent drop from last year — Idaho’s first overall enrollment decline in decades — accompanies an unprecedented influx of students at virtual schools and newly created remote learning programs in districts scrambling to provide flexibility for families during the coronavirus pandemic.
Enrollment is important because it impacts some $2 billion in state tax dollars earmarked annually for schools. The latest enrollment tally will shape a large portion of these payouts districts and charters are scheduled to receive next month.
