ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On Monday, the city of Albany welcomed several new businesses to the city, cutting the ribbon for Vita-Fuse Albany, Sugar Mama’s Bakery, Rebel Dolls and Bottoms Up.
The city of Albany is working to bring in more jobs to help those in need.
Owners said they didn’t let the pandemic stop them from overcoming the odds.
“It’s always encouraging when you can create jobs that are not present in your community. It is now present in the 229. So, of course, if it does well, then you expand and when you expand you have more clinics, you have more jobs and you have more management layers and more nurses, so that’s what we are excited about,” said Milan Patel, partner of the new business development. ....

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - One person was arrested after the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit (ADDU) busted a marijuana grow operation Friday on Whispering Pines Road, according to a press release WALB received Saturday.
The press release states that a concerned resident flagged down ADDU members and told them people were possibly selling marijuana out of a house in the 1800 block of Whispering Pines Road.
In the release, it says that the lead investigator and members of the unit planned a way to determine if the claim was true and conducted an operation at the residence. ....

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - An Albany family said their dog has been missing for almost a week now, and has yet to return home.
The dog is also a service dog and has helped their daughter get through depression and anxiety.
“It’s just been hard not seeing her here. I’ve dealt with anxiety and depression growing up when I was born and everything,” said Ariana Thomas, the owner of the dog. “It’s just been hard and ever since she came into my life she’s like my own therapy dog. I just really want her home.” ....

TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - An elementary school in Tift County held a fundraising event to bring awareness to cancer research.
Northside Elementary School held its “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser in an effort to help children who are diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma.
The school raised over $2,000 and was able to raise over $1,000 in just one day.
Students who helped raise the most money were recognized and received gifts.
”It made me feel good because I know a lot of kids suffer. I’m glad that we were able to raise money to help them,” said Lakota Simmons, a student at Northside. “I would say my role was helping people and asking them to raise money for it.” ....

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - There’s not one person the pandemic hasn’t impacted in some way this past year.
Susan Hardy is a counselor at Phoebe’s behavioral health center. She leads group therapy sessions and says the pandemic pushed many people to their breaking points.
“We’ve had to double our services for what we provide. We also offer groups for children, and we’re adding a new teen group, as we speak,” she said. ....
