Michigan had 2nd highest number of wrongful conviction exonerations in 2020 By Amber Ainsworth Only one other state exonerated more people in 2020. Illinois had 22. Nationally, 129 people were exonerated. Twelve of Michigan’s exonerations were people convicted of murder, three were for attempted murder, two were for child abuse, one was for robbery, one was for assault, and one was for selling or possessing drugs. The National Registry of Exonerations credits Wayne County’s Conviction Integrity Unit as a driving force behind the state’s number of overturned convictions. The unit helped with 13 of the exonerations. The county’s CIU investigates if there is new evidence proving that a convicted person did not commit a crime. ....

Detroit Free Press Unreliable testimony in a 1994 trial sent Larry Smith, a Detroit man, to prison for 26 years for a murder he said he didn t commit. Smith was freed Thursday, despite a justice system glitch this time an information technology issue that could have postponed his release. All of the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice computer services were down, the court administrator said. But Judge Shannon Walker signed the order dismissing all charges against Smith, and he was released by the state Department of Corrections. Smith, 45, spent nearly his entire adult life behind bars and is the latest case in which a reevaluation of a Michigan murder conviction has been overturned after a new examination. ....

Come November 20, 2020, Forbes walked out of prison a free man after a key witness, Annice Kennebrew, admitted to have falsely implicated him during his trial. In 1982, Forbes was arrested and convicted of arson and murder. He became a prime suspect after reports emerged that he’d been shot by the very same man who died in an apartment fire that was deliberately lit.
