In North America, it is widely believed that skiing within the ski area boundary is safe, but the recent events at Palisades Tahoe – where three skiers were injured and one died after an in-bounds avalanche – shows, yet again, that it is not always the case.

On 2/4/21 at 5:59 AM EST
Three hikers have died after an avalanche in the Bear Mountain area of Alaska, state troopers have confirmed.
The bodies of Thomas Devine, aged 54, from nearby Chugiak, Matthew Nyman, a 43-year-old from Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Edward Watson, a 50-year-old from Miami, were recovered on Wednesday.
The men were reported missing after they failed to return from a hike in the Bear Mountain region. Bear Mountain is in Chugach State Park, near Mirror Lake and Peters Creek.
The group set off on Tuesday morning at about 10:30 a.m. and were expected to return that afternoon at around 5 p.m. When they did not, the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center was alerted.

KELLOGG, Idaho — Thursday marks one year since an avalanche took the lives of three skiers on Silver Mountain.
Hours turned into days of searching for survivors, only to end up with three people gone: Carl Humphreys, Scott Parsons and Molly Hubbard.
Ski resorts honored their lives Thursday morning and those who did survive the terrifying slide.
Watkins remembers that day vividly, losing his friend 58-year-old Humphreys to the avalanche.
“He was a free spirit, he was an adventurer. He was always living on the edge. He probably was one of the most profound water kayakers of the area,” he said of Humphreys.
