Scientists Discover That Egyptian Mummy Thought to Be Male Priest Was Actually Pregnant Woman in Her 20s
A team of researchers in Warsaw, Poland, carrying out an examination on an ancient Egyptian mummy, initially believed to be a male priest, were amazed when the mummy was revealed to be a woman who was pregnant before her death.
The discovery, made by researchers of the Warsaw Mummy Project, is the first of its kind. The mummy dates back to the 1st century B.C. and is the first case of a pregnant embalmed body known in the world today.

Scientists Discover World's First Pregnant Ancient Egyptian Mummy

The ancient Egyptian priest, Hor-Djehuty, was important enough to earn himself a spiffy sarcophagus for his corpse. The only problem for the ancient priest, however, was that he was not the corpse who ended up in his stone coffin. Instead, in 2016, researchers discovered it was a mystery woman. And now the same researchers say ancient Egyptians mummified the woman while she was pregnant.

WARSAW — An ancient Egyptian mummy once believed to be the remains of a male priest is actually the embalmed body of a woman in the third trimester of pregnancy, Polish scientists said on Friday.
Marzena Ozarek-Szilke, an anthropologist at the Warsaw Mummy Project, was examining a CT scan of a mummy at the National Museum in the Polish capital when she spotted something peculiar.
“When I looked at the lesser pelvis of our mummy I was interested in what was inside… I thought I saw a tiny foot,” Ozarek-Szilke said.
