Swifts setting standard: Can any team stop them?

Anthony Breeze
THROUGH the great attacking play in Rugby League Ipswich Round four action, one club firmed as Premiership favourites.
Swifts again turned on a try feast against Norths.
Here's how this weekend's games shape up.
Saturday (5.30pm) - Brothers v Norths at Raceview
BROTHERS returned to form with a bang last weekend with a great win over Goodna.
Norths were on the end of a Swifts onslaught.
Brothers will be hoping playmaker Wes Conlon is okay. He was replaced at halftime. Most of Brothers attacking options come through him.
Conlon relies on his forwards setting the platform which then provides the required time to set up different plays to test the defence line.

AS Swifts celebrated like they'd just won a grand final, their player of the match had his own reason for being delighted.
Flying Fijian winger Ratunaisa Vatuinaruku enjoyed a near perfect performance in Swifts' stunning 52-18 A-Grade victory over Brothers at Purga.
Vatuinaruku booted eight goals from nine attempts and scored a first-half try as the Bluebirds raced to a 24-6 halftime advantage before continuing to outclass the 2019 premiers after the break.
"It was a big win for me and for my kids,'' Vatuinaruku said, typifying the fine family spirit at Swifts Rugby League Club.

Farewell 'Rodgo': Tributes flow to great footy backer

Anthony Breeze
THE Ipswich Rugby League fraternity and Brothers Football Club were saddened early in the week when news came through that Ian "Rodgo'' Rodgers had passed away after a long, tough fight.
Everyone that knew this great man always had positive things to say about him. He will be a big loss to all those who had the honour of meeting or working with him.
Rodgo had dedicated his early life to touch football where he is a life member.
A huge part of his life was his beloved Brothers Football Club where he also is a life member.

Tenacious Tigers showcase youth, courage, leadership

The Tolova'a siblings are Norths juniors.
Charalambous played his first A-Grade match for the club in the second row after previous stints with West End and in England.
Masson-McKlaren's effort at hooker off the bench was creditable after he broke his leg two years ago.
The debutants had more important roles after Norths lost vice-captain Ethan Page to a shoulder injury at halftime.
Leading 16-6 at the break, Norths got the job done.
"We dropped more ball (in the first half) than what we would have liked but defensively they were really strong,'' Williamson said.
"They all stepped up in the second half and basically dug deep knowing the fact that Pagey wasn't going to be there for the last 40.

Loyal captain backed by Brothers professionalism

BEING a former state touch football representative, Josh Leisemann developed a skilful passing game with a burst of speed.
However, he also credits two decades in the Brothers Ipswich rugby league system for helping him secure his latest captaincy opportunity.
Fresh from Brothers' season-opening 36-0 shutout of Fassifern, five-eight Leisemann remains a proud clubman, happy to lead alongside 2019 grand final-winning skipper Wes Conlon.
"It's my first time as captain this year. I'm pretty honoured,'' Leisemann, 27, said.
The Ipswich born and bred footballer shared why he has remained loyal for more than 20 years.
"It's just the family vibe, the culture and its professionalism,'' he said.

Beware Brothers: Footy stalwart rebuilds powerful unit

HAVING lost a majority of their 2019 premiership-winning side and taking a year off, Brothers Ipswich could have been scratching for A-Grade players this season.
But typical of Brothers professionalism, the powerhouse Ipswich club has rebuilt and recruited well for their first game of the 2021 Rugby League Ipswich competition.
Back for his fourth season as head coach, club stalwart Jason Connors said he had "less than half'' of his side that beat Swifts 35-10 in the 2019 grand final.
After Brothers sat out last year's makeshift Volunteers Cup competition, a number of players moved to other sports or devoted more time to their families.

HAVING put his hand up early to play, popular footballer Ricky Bird is eagerly awaiting today's Ipswich Indigenous All Stars encounter.
The former Ipswich Jets half was among the first players to accept when the call went out to line up against the Ipswich All Stars at the North Ipswich Reserve.
"It's for a good cause so I said I'd get out on the paddock and have a bit of a gallop around,'' Bird said.
Just allow the respected footballer some time off after the hotly anticipated showdown.
Bird, who turns 44 in two weeks, last played for a memorial team in an Indigenous carnival two years ago.
